Just going to cliff this cause nobody likes long paragraphs, anyone in the military (specifically USAF) that can shed some light?
- Score 90 on ASVAB (qualify for most jobs)
- Should be going to MEPS for physical sometime this month
- Don't want to enlist unless I know 100% what job I'm getting
- Recruiter tells me I need to list some jobs I'd be okay with, and an aptitude field. (General, mechanical, etc)
- Says I'll either get one of the jobs, or be sent in open under whatever field I pick
- Tells me that I have to list a field so there is a chance I go in open no matter what
- Not sure if what he's saying is true lol, if it isn't true should I just go to a new recruiter?
thx boys

according to this site it's true
"Army. In the Army, an enlisted job is called an "MOS," or "Military Occupation Specialty." The Army is the only service that offers a guaranteed job (MOS) to everyone. The Army has no such thing as an "open" or "undesignated" enlistment. However, the MOS's offered to you, might not be the one(s) you wanted. It depends upon your qualifications and what jobs have current/projected openings."

You sign your contract at MEPS. This has nothing to do with your recruiter.
From what I understand, the AF has a sheet where you list 5 categories of what you will go in to.
I don't know about the Navy/Corps.
If you want a guaranteed 100% slot for a school for a specific job, the Army does that.
I'm not trying to convince you to do anything, but in my experience, I tried to join the AF for a year after high school. The guy dicked me around for a year and then left and when he left he threw away all my paperwork so there was nothing to go on for the new recruiter. He was never there or picked up his phone anyways.
So I was like **** this. I talked to the Army recruiter and he got all my **** done in 2 weeks. Left home 2 months after. I didn't get my ideal job because there wasn't any slots for what I wanted at the time, but from the list of those available, I got the one I picked. It is also highly technical, very marketable on the civilian market with a security clearance, and it put me in school for nearly a year (which also counts as college credits).

first thing is first, the needs of the AF come before you
that being said its normal for you to pick out of 7 jobs that you would LIKE, and a good recruiter would do his best to try and get you one of them. Depending on AF manning the jobs you choose might already be filled.
The best way you get the job you want. If you want a spec op job you wouldnt really have to work hard to get a slot, due to ur recruiter having an incentive on landing you the job.
Learn to play hard ball, nothing is official in till you sign a contract. no matter how much processing you do NOTHING IS OFFICIAL till you sign. If you feel like youre not being treated honestly you could always go to another recruiter.
At the end of the day it might not be possible to get your dream job, plan B would be to go in and LATER cross train.Last edited by celltechdog; 05-31-2016 at 01:03 PM.

He can absolutely guarantee you a job before you sign. I did this same thing. Told him I wasn't signing anything until I had either contracting or ATC (air traffic control). Waited a few months and got a contacting job. Signed and now have 7 months until I get out of the military. Thank the lawd!

you can pick your job (rate) in the Navy unless you scored low and you go undesignated. Since a lot of folks are trying to get into the AF, they can be selective. They are the only service from my understanding that dont cater to the high demand of recruits trying to get shipped right out of high school. they have set training schedules for boot camp and tech schools and don't have a summer surge capability since everything is level loaded, whereas the other services push out most recruits in the summer months.

USAF checking in. I came in with a guaranteed job or AFSC. It is possible. Just need to be willing to wait to ship out to basic when the job opens up. Don't listen to these "been to the recruiter once" *******s. Don't go open general. Don't be a cop. My recruiter specifically asked me what job I wanted to do in the AF. Problem was at the time, I didn't know.
