The difference is the STI (or any other factory car) will be making 300+ without voiding warranty and won't have added wear on the trans and internals because it's already built for the power.
Bump a BRZ/FRS to 300 horsepower and see how well the trans and internals hold up. You will also void any warranty and the reliability of the car will be out the window.
Having said this, you can get a 4 cylinder Mustang starting at 25K.....same as the brz/frs and it will already be at 300hp▪█───█▪ Everybody wants to be a bodybuilder, but nobody want to lift no heavy-azz weights. ▪█───█▪

The cars are moddelled after old corollas that barely had enough HP to make it up a steep hill.
Maybe I am just an 86 enthusiast, but I wasn't suprised at all by the lack of power. That doesn't mean I am not going to supercharge mine, but that was the fun of an AE86. A light, FR car that you had to drive the piss out of.I am going to die under a heavy barbell one day and it's going to be f*cking awesome--HamburgerTrain

Yes it finally has independent rear suspension. (My friend drives one and we switch vehicles once in a while for kicks.)
It handles way better than the ridiculous solid axle previous generations had. Doesn't make it weigh any less.
With the 4banger turbo you absolutely need every single HP to move that thing. It's not slow but people make it seem like it's a c7 compared to the BRZ when it's clearly not.
Not to downplay its substantially better interior or its straight line performance, but the thing is over 800lbs heavier and feels like it in the corners.
The rear slides out if I so much as think about taking corners at the speeds I would take in my BRZ, on stock "Prius tires" no less. Can't even imagine the difference in handling if I got wider wheels and PSS's.

at 300HP factory with a car that light and 2WD 90% of the population will put it into a wall or ditch in 1K miles or less if they don't kill someone first.

the car was built for handling and fun, spirited driving. I drive a v8, but there is something special about being able to ring a 4 cylinder car out through the rpm's. And being light, it can feel rather capable especially on turns and the like. I've seen quite a few take corners and onramps in a way that you don't usually see cars rip through.
When people sit in them they instantly feel the proper driving position.
How was it Kim? When I can, I always make it a point to debrief our testing director and handling/ride quality guru Kim Reynolds whenever he climbs out of a car thats just been figure eighted. Not only is everything fresh in his mind, but theres no editing whatsoever. Also, Kim hates it when I quote him and I like upsetting Kim.
Its just fantastic. He went on to say that the 2013 Subaru BRZ, Subarus new RWD sports coupe, handled better than the $178,000+ Porsche, Godzilla and the McLaren hed put around our figure eight hours earlier.

I like the older ones because it seemed like a fun car to drive. It would be even better if they offered convertibles. I think for everyday driving, I would rather have something like a Chevrolet Impala or Ford Fusion either with a big V6 or a small V8. But that's just me, I like bigger cars that have more interior room.

I'm considering buying a used one or a salvage title one and slapping a supercharger/turbo on it. I've been searching for a car that feels like a s2k that isn't a s2k for a while and the only thing that feels close to one is a frs.
I refuse to spend over 15k for a 15 year old car that's why s2k is not a option... and too little storage room for a DD. The frs/brz is just an excellent chassis begging for a little extra kick

Friend of mine bought an 86 a little while ago, so we swapped cars and I took it for a test drive. Couldn't get over how slow it was and still blows my mind they didn't release it with a turbo from factory. I drive a Skyline so I've been spoilt with easy power from minimal mods, but its a shame Toyota / Nissan have shied away from fun affordable turbo sports cars in the last 10-15 years.

Here is the real issue with the FRS/BRZ/GT86 and its not that its under powered while totally being the problem that its under powered. For what the car is it is perfect powered for most individuals at the track. Lets face it, all its glowing reviews are because its a great track car with a decent interior and a gorgeous exterior. Most drivers can't handle that much power on a track anyway. It fits perfectly alongside Mazda Miata's and S2000's at your local autocross or track day. As soon as you get it on the street where, again lets face it, most racing happens or the quarter mile which is all most communities have, it becomes next to useless. Sure the driver is going to go on and on about how his car handles better than your Camaro but if you challenge him to a race, the excuses will start flying, because how is he going to accept a race when there is no readily available track with twisties? Everyone knows his car is going to get slaughtered. Even worse is slightly older cars that are cheaper than one of these things new that will give it a run for its money on the track and destroy it on the street. 350z's, Evo's, Sti's, E36 AND e46 M3's. For a little more you could get an Lotus Elise. If you buy it, you are really just showing your lack of understanding when it comes to car purchases. It was hyped to hell so thats why people wanted it, despite knowing full well it was going to be slow. The justification being I'll slap a turbo or supercharger on it, when they know they have neither the knowledge nor the funds to have someone else do it.
Honestly if you wanted a fun small car that handles just as well, is more practical, and honestly way more fun while still being brand new and having a warranty you should get this.
The fiesta St was literally the most fun car I have EVER driven. and if you want more power a COBB tune is a hell of a lot cheaper than a supercharger kit. Not to mention its plug and play.*Updated* If you can't hit a 320 yard drive, are you even a man?

how are the laws where you live? Where i'm from you can go fast enough anywhere without worrying about immediate drivers suspension and tow (going 50+km/hr over limit). So you can rip it on highways and from stop lights and signs but you can't really get out the power especially at the top end where small four cylinders are lackluster in comparison. But with a four cylinder you can ring it through the gears and feel like you're getting everything out of the engine.
