SEOUL, March 16 (Reuters) - North Korea's supreme court sentenced American student Otto Warmbier, who was arrested while visiting the country, to 15 years of hard labour for crimes against the state, China's Xinhua news agency reported on Wednesday.
Warmbier, a University of Virginia student, was detained by the North in January for trying to steal an item bearing a propaganda slogan from his hotel in Pyongyang and had confessed to crimes against the state, North Korean media said previously.
Warmbier, who is from Wyoming, Ohio, and was 21 at the time of his arrest, told a media conference in Pyongyang last month that his crime "is very severe and pre-planned."
He was at the end of a five-day New Year's group tour of North Korea when he was delayed at airport immigration before being taken away by officials, according to the tour operator that had arranged the trip.
North Korea has a long history of detaining foreigners and has used jailed Americans in the past to extract high-profile visits from the United States, with which it has no formal diplomatic relations.
North Korea is also holding a Korean-Canadian Christian pastor it sentenced to hard labour for life in December for subversion.
It has previously handed down lengthy sentences to foreigners before freeing them.
In 2014, North Korea released three detained Americans.
Former Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, who had previously travelled to North Korea, met the North's ambassador to the United Nations on Tuesday to press for the release of Warmbier, the New York Times reported.
"I urged the humanitarian release of Otto, and they agreed to convey our request,” Richardson was quoted as saying.

lol? hes crying because his future is gone. All his hopes and ambition. Who knows how his friends/family will be when he actually survives the 15 years and gets to go back. Probably was someone who was social and now he has to spend 15 years in solitude, no one to relate to.

That's truly unfortunate to hear because his life is destroyed.
Personally, I have no idea why people go to North Korea. I just can't wrap my head around it: Why would you go to North Korea? That's like running away from the finish line into a nest of barbed wire.
For all the moral policing being done around the world (usually the middle east), it's rather incredible North Korea is left to be the world's littelst sh*thead nation, mistreating their people, allowing them to starve, torture them, and test nukes.
Which then circles back to why would you want to go to North Korea? That in it of itself is backward.
North Korea: Where the grocery stores are fake and the nationalism is brainwashed in, but the hard labor camps don't skimp on the boulders and trees.I will stand firm, I refuse to kneel - The fury in me is divine
My dark grave awaits, my fate is revealed - But I'm not afraid to die
If you have any problems or need advice, feel free to ask

Good.
Let this be a lesson to MISC'ers: the Real World is tough and cruel and hard. MISC is full of too many spoilt, Western kids who have never seen war...never seen poverty...never had to struggle for anything...always had everything handed to them on a silver platter...
The majority of the world are struggling day-to-day to just to have one meal a day. MISC has become a cesspit of white suburban boys with too much money and too much time on their hands. You are a cotton-wool generation...coddled by your parents...and you act all tough online with you secret "in-jokes"...but in reality...we are all scared little boys acting tough. Like this guy that got arrested...and is now bawling his eyes out.
Please do some volunteer work in a Third World Country to realise how lucky we MISC'ers are in USA, Australia and UK. We are so blessed and have cushy lives...yet we all act tough on here and complain about HBB's and act like we would be so bad-ass in a fight...but in real-life...we are all scared little white boys.

It's always those socialist college kids that think NK is actually really nice. And that it's just demonized by evil capitalists propaganda that go over there. NK has these programs for westerners to go visit them to show them great Best Korea is. Similar to "The Interview" movie they only show them the "good" parts so they could come back home and have nothing but positive things to say about that place.
Take me to Band Camp, where the real Miscers are.
