You dont need a PWO for a 5k lol. What you need is a light breakfast 2-3 hours before.

Carbohydrate rich breakfast that is low on fibre and easy on your gut (e.g oatmeal made with water) atleast 3h out, if it's way more maybe light snack like a banana 1h before, 100mg of caffeine in supplement form 30mins before if you are not overly sensitive to caffeine, race.

    those are my recommendations ;-)

Sure crazy pre-workouts with stuff like Methylhexanamin or other speed-like substances work too, might kill you, and are probably banned even though noone is gonna test you at a local race anyway.

Military brah. Ran 3 miles eod for years, with exercises. I tried every combination of pre workout, food, empty stomach, all that. For me, at 210 lbs, the best was pb on 1 piece of bread about an hour before run, about a quart of water, no pre workout.

I've had better luck with a light meal a few hours before hand. Pre workouts dont do anything for me unless i'm lifting

Caffeine has been shown to have some benefits on 5k performance. Just don't take anything for a race if you haven't taken and tried it for training
