i would not go as far as saying instant oats are not real food. the problem is the added sugar. but if you are in a bulk or a maintenance stage of dieting, i see no real problem with it. it still beats pancakes or sugary cereals, because you are getting complex carbs which can give you a good energy boost. some morning i will add a half cup of plain oats to my package of cinnamon roll quaker instant oats, and then have a protein shake, this always give me a great energy boost during workouts. in my honest opinion being super strict on your dieting is a bit obsessive. and most importantly just make adjustments in your daily dieting if you do have flavored oats.

You are correct. Quaker State 'oatmeal' contains no sugar. It's a motor oil
Quaker oatmeal (or generic brand) are GREAT choices
Back to the topic, The "regular" oatmeal in the packets is a BETTER choice because it doesn't have as much sugar, but it's still higher on the glycemic index because it's more finely ground. Buy your oatmeal by the tub. It's just as easy... microwave it, and it's so much better for you. Do a search because there are a million posts on ways to flavor the oatmeal and make it taste great!
Packet oatmeal is acceptable for post-workout. Not the best choice, but acceptable.I was thirsty for everything, blood wasn't my style.

Find a health food store and buy some Old Fashioned Rolled Oats (nothing else in the ingredients). $0.49 a pound at Henry’s.
Go to the grocery store and buy:
This surup, or something just as good.
Cinnamon.
Non-Fat Milk.
It will be just as good if not better than that processed, sugary crap. It's better to be cynical than naive.
