Calves are very much genetic in terms of how big they are, although going super heavy on calf raises and alternating fast explosive lifts and slow controlled ones seems to make mine quite sore the next day. And do both seated calf raises and standing ones if you can so you can work them from various angles.

Other stuff that seems to make mine really sore involves running stairs as explosively as I can and plyometric drills.

You can make them grow and sore, but you just really gotta train the hell out of them for that to happen.

Why do you want them to be sore exactly?

I find forefoot running to be the best at targeting calves and beyond that plyometric split squats are great as well

Soreness does not indicate a good workout and some people never get sore but still grow. Progress and visual growth are better indicators for muscle growth.

Calf raises are one of my favorite calf exercises.
