Heaviest thing to put in a weight vest?

    I just bought this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/110LBS-50KG-...UAAOSwlV9WREsm

110 lbs max weight, though I'm sure that's with the perfect weights.

I was thinking of bags of sand since I ain't rich, but I don't think I'll get 100 lbs of sand in that vest.

What else could I use that's heavier and not too expensive?

It's probably the cheapest route. 50lb bags of play sand are $3 at Lowe's. When you get into lead shot, ball bearings, I'm sure it will go up a ton in price.

Will I be able to get more weight out of those? I don't want to be confined to 30 lbs if my vest can do 100 with the right stuff.

Almost any kind of shot pellets run about $5 a pound. most of that is shipping.

There is a guy in Alaska who sells blocks of lead on eBay for the black powder guys and fishermen, and a lot of the Goruck crowd like his blocks for loading up backpacks. He makes different sizes and in antimony lead cam get about 30 lbs into a small USPS flat rate box. Best deal around. Ask him about other sizes since he makes all kinds.

For your needs, staying inexpensive, I'd go to a steel remnants vendor who have leftover bits of various steels. Mostly they have longer pieces because that is what people usually want to buy, but they inevitably have tubs of little cutoff pieces that are 2-3 inches long. Tape them together and you get a lot of weight going.

Who buys a weight vest without the weights?

Anyhow, you could try filing it up with hope.

Absolutely. lead is 7x heavier than sand. And it should be dirt cheap too. Check with recyclers in your area. It's on CL here in bricks for $1/lb.

go to a garage that changes tires. Ask them for some lead. They pop off the weights whenever they take off a tire. I have had them give me a 5 gal pail half full.

lots of good dirt cheap suggestions in this thread, I just wish I could follow them. But living in Thailand it's hard to even communicate with these blue-collar guys at recycling centers and mechanics places.

someone else mentioned getting some heavy chains in another thread. Here are the thickest chains I saw:

$5.30 per foot or meter (ya I need to ask them).

Anyone know how heavy these chains are? I'm thinking about them, I could literally just wrap them around me for pushups and everything else.

throw a set of chains on your shoulders along with the vest. a pair of 5/8 lifting chains would get you another 40lbs worth on top of the vest
