Any issues with these mats instead of mats from TSC

They end up being about half as much as the 4" x 6" mats from TSC right now. They're 1/2" thick and seems like a solid option. Plan to get about 6 of these (150 sqft) unless you guys think otherwise? Not having a smell seems like a solid selling point for me.

Doesn't seem like the worst option as long as they're hard rubber. If they're soft like yoga mats, then no. Here's a fixed link. "Pro.source" is censored. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KHT4L1I/

BTW My TSC mats hardly smell.

I use these as a cheap way to protect my floor from scratches and put spare weights and accessories on them. For the purpose of being able to place things on there, they are fine, but they most definitely do not compare to stall mats. The density is way lower and they won't protect your floor from dropping any real weight from height. If you have a decent rack and bench (which I think you do) you'll probably end up tearing through the material anyway, it's like having two yoga mats on top of each other.

I have called TSC and they often do sales on the 4x6 stall mats to bring them down to $30 for a 4x6 mat. That isn't a huge price difference if you get the sale price. I got my mats from secondhand but supposedly they are from TSC and they are closer to 7/8" thick rather than 3/4" thick when I measured it. Definitely feels worthy of dropping heavy objects on it should that happen.

Those are foam, not rubber. I scrubbed by stall mats with simple green, but not sure that helped with the smell. Apparently if you leave them outside in the sun, or try one of the other 50 suggestions they may not smell so bad.

Mine smelled in a confined vehicle and when first sitting on my porch. I'm not sure if what I did even mattered but I took them out back, scrubbed a side and let it sit in the sun, then did the other side the next day. I don't recall a strong smell once inside really ever unless I stuck my nose down on them. Not sure I'd even scrub new ones if I got them today but might do it just as a precaution.

seriously it's like you're about to make every mistake i made, except that you're posting about it first and then listening to advice...

under the powerblock bench are the old puzzle mats that i started with. these are awful. this is $40 worth of puzzle mats (2 packs) and they weigh a few ounces compared to the horse stall mat. i'm very proud of myself for rolling up one of the mats, picking it up by each end and then carrying it downstairs myself. i had to get help for the 2nd and i'm not even ashamed, they clearly weigh several hundred pounds each. clearly.

my friend mishandled one of my powerblocks and dropped it from about a foot off the ground. the corner struck the puzzle mat and the tile underneath is broken. i can deadlift comfortably on my horse stall mats without worry.

so in closing: $40 worth of puzzle mats sitting next to $80 worth of horses stall mats in the picture: you know what to do.

I have to give Joe credit as he is learning from our mistakes. I was too stubborn/cheap at first also, then quickly learned the guys in the equipment forum are right. Here is my mistake in life, down to the puzzle mats.

Don't buy this s---. Ever. It is s---. I have s--- like this on my gym floor and it was the biggest mistake I made in putting together a home gym. You have two options: horse stall mats, or their better-quality cousins made for gyms - 4'x6' 3/4" thick mats; rolled rubber flooring, at least 3/8" thick.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

I think I made more threads than you

Yes, these guys here will DEFINITELY save you $$$$$$$$$$$!!! I also look at those "foam" yoga matts, but drove down to the tractor store and got 4 heavy 4X6' stall matts. I could have done fine with 3, but I didn't want to make the 1 hr + drive again if I needed it. Room looks better with 4 anyway. And they hardly smell at all. I don't notice it unless I really think of it. I kinda like the smell anyway. It's like smelling salt! Helps wake you up for the lifts!
