Miscer of Subsaharan African descent checking in with my two cents.
- The word "black" invokes negative connotations, as it is associated with all things that are bad (e.g. black magic, blackmail, black death, Black Tuesday, etc). Hence, I don't particularly like it.
- "African American" is way too long and technical. Also, it's odd because no other racial group in America is identified by the continent from it which it originates.
- Both terms suck, but if I had to choose, I guess I'd choose "black" because it's the simpler of the two.

Good point, if colored is so bad why is it called the NAACP?
ANSWER: In 2008 Carla Sims, communications director for the NAACP in Washington, D.C., said "the term 'colored' is not derogatory, [the NAACP] chose the word 'colored' because it was the most positive description commonly used [in 1909, when the association was founded]. It's outdated and antiquated but not offensive."[10] To date, there has not been a movement to change the name of the organization to use a different term.

Just like you, I can be called brown (afghan).
I honestly don't care if people call me Brown or middle Eastern or afghan looking. Doesn't really make a difference, but why should you even need to include that?
I'm American, I pay taxes and vote just like everyone else. Why go to the trouble of saying African American or asian American etc. We're all in this together ya know?*former 310 pounds fatty crew*

It depends. If you're anywhere near "successful" and dating/married to anyone that isn't 375% black, you "wish you were white", get a lot of dirty looks, etc etc etc.
For the rest of us? F#ck no. Always found it odd that someone could entertain the idea of being a different race...Like race actually matters(TBH it does...But it's 2015 and it shouldn't)
Besides,According to 23andme.com, the average African American is 75 percent sub-Saharan African, 22 percent European and only 0.6 percent Native American. * According to Ancestry.com, the average African American is 65 percent sub-Saharan African, 29 percent European and 2 percent Native American.VOL is life.

Native Americans are a special group; the term that's used to refer to them is meant to emphasize the fact that they are the original inhabitants of this continent and that therefore they have been granted special rights (e.g. they can live on reservations that have different laws from those of the general populace).
The term "Asian" is somewhat different because it's been made analogous to the terms "Black" or "White," as the word "Yellow" would be offensive.

I know it has a history but if history has taught us anything about words it's that meaning of words can change over time.
there was a time when "Guy" was just a name, then after a famous guy named Guy Fawkes lived, the word "guy" was used to describe a frightful figure. now, a couple hundred years later a guy is just a normal way to refer to a man. what i'm saying is people need to gtfover what happened before they lived, the world changes.*** Religious, Gun-Nut, Conservative, Military, Police Crew ***

Wut, black is the result of no wavelengths of light being reflected by the object, white is the result of all wavelengths of light being reflected by the object. You have it backwards. When you go and look at the night sky into the vaccum of space (nothing), do you see white?
