I am a member of an "old skool" spit and sawdust gym, that is full of racks, benches and rusty weights. Also full of people that are more than willing to pass on their knowledge.

Sad to say that its a decent place and the people are all right but they all seem to want to do everything except deadlifts and squats.
On the bright side, the squat racks are always empty.
On the down side, just by glancing around the room you can see about half a dozen people at any time doing side bends while holding a plate.
shoulders are popular too. some guys and girls too do nothing but them.
there is sort of a "powerlifting' type section that is back in the corner where people seem to be scared to go so thats where the squat racks are so its nice back there.
there is a whole section of crazy contraption machines that look like they used to train the mercury 7 astronauts on except they are new. no idea what they are all about."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Nobody is born a warrior, in exactly the same way that nobody is born an average man. After all the horror stories I read here about people having to struggle for time in the rack or others hogging the equipment, I'm glad I did. Although that's not why I built it.
If you can afford a steel rack, that's probably the best for balance and durability. I threw mine together in a few days with lumber and steel plumbing pipe and a busy drill bit. It's not as steady as a pro-built one, but it's strong and does the trick. Since I took the picture I've moved it indoors for the winter, and gotten myself a decent olympic bar and set of 2" plates. It's been hugely worthwhile for me.

A hole in the wall gym. People are hardly ever there. Mostly it's the perfect place to get good money but it has its drawbacks. I've only been lifting there two weeks. Today I'm squatting and they've got a mirror right in front of the squat rack. WHY?. I pulled a muscle in my back trying to deal with the unusual effect of watching myself squat. Trust me I tried covering the mirror, unloading the bar backwards, etc. I was pissed. On a side note.... Does anyone squat while looking into a mirror?

Home Gym Crew.
The first real gym I belonged to was a Gold's Gym back in CT in the 90's. Loved it.
Checked it out on Google Maps this morning ... and it is now a Church.
I had this silly notion of one day returning for the nostalgia and snagging a pump. It is not to be.One day, maybe not soon, but one day, it will be mine turn to feel the bar bend. One day.
We're all gonna make it Crew

As I live in China,my gym I go to is a Chinese gym,its not very good but its cheap,1600rmb for a year, not sure what that converts to in US money. The guy that runs the gym does not care about anything apart from just making money. The trainers dont work out and most of them smoke.but its cheap.

Consider yourself lucky.
I used to belong to a gym like that, but it was mainly for personal training.
They had an old weight room in the back where a few of us worked out.
They weren't open all the time, only when they had clients.
Since The owner lived there, he gave us keys so we could go anytime we wanted.
When he moved out, we had to turn in our keys, because of insurance purposes.
I now belong to a 24 hour gym, and it pretty much sux.
It seems like the members spend more time sitting on the bench or stations playing on their phones than lifting.I like to ride my horses and shoot my guns

I belong to the most hard core gym ever. We use rocks for weight. People squat until they pass out. I saw a guy bite his tongue off yesterday. And then he ate it for protein. Yeh, it's pretty bad ass

Anytime fitness. One near me is run by a good guy that lifts and knows what he's doing. Everything is set up right and I love the power racks. Being able to lift at any location at any time is nice for road trips too. Being single and on the move a lot its very convenient.
