Long gun is an actual thing.

A long gun is basically just a firearm that is fired from the shoulder using two hands. A shotgun or rifle, in other words. As in, not a handgun or a stock-less SMG or whatever.

The media word "assault rifle" is incorrectly used. An actual assault rifle is a rifle chambered for an intermediate rifle cartridge capable of burst or full auto fire (and thus a a machine gun in the US), but those who want to mislead the ignorant use the term to refer to semi automatic rifles because it sounds scary and makes people think of machine guns (not that there's anything wrong with machine guns)
