I make about 80k and so does my wife. I could live anywhere in the world on $100k comfortably. $100k isn't filthy rich?!?!!

I'll hit 100k this month and feel very comfortable with my life! no kids, nice car not outta control (2013 g37 low miles), living in one of the top 5 most expensive places in the USA. (renting tho not owning a home, that would take a few more years if i wanted to own here)
100k now isnt what 100k was when i was a kid of course. but its still very possible to live comfortably anywhere in the USA just not lavishly unless your in some shi-t hole of a townig- jwarrenfit
always respond to pms

I honestly don't know why anyone would want to live on less than 8 figures. How the fuk do you afford mansions, rare artwork, luxury cars, private islands, yachts on such a pittance? Even on a million you'd be hard pressed to hire a staff to run a 30k sqft mansion and have enough leftover to provide an adequate lifestyle.

depends on your situation
I earn about 90k from my 9-5
But I have a mortgage free home
stock portfolio
additional rental property
no kids
100% of my 9-5 income is my discretionary spending
I probably have more discretionary spending than a $500k ceo with sizeable mortgage, kids, wife, no other income etc

Congrats OP on buying hook, line and sinker into all of the things society tells you you should strive for. They've got you by the balls.
Define your own values. You can either look at money as a means to providing your ideal lifestyle. Or you can look at your ideal lifestyle as a means to making money.
Have fun with the rat race. I'm pretty damn happy sitting at around 20k a year (for now). I'm not going to lie and pretend like more money wouldn't be nice sometimes, but that's coming--and I'd rather be poor forever on my own terms than 'successful' just because I did things just like everyone else to get the things everyone else feels like they should want.Last edited by WriteOrDie; 11-18-2015 at 11:43 AM.

Well for starters, since we are both in Alberta, 450k will get you a mediocre starter home that needs some serious TLC. It could get you a nice 1 bedroom condo though.
However, car payments, car insurance, property tax, food/living expenses, cable, internet, cell bill, investments, heating your home in winter etc etc. You are not left with much srs. I dont even own my own home (1300 rent for a 1 bedroom) and dont have a ton of cash to throw around (make over 100k). 200k is the new 100k.
