No, it hasn't been a year since I joined this site, but this month has marked a year since I finally decided to get off of my lazy duff and start lifting. I was pretty lost when I started, and didn't have much to go on, just fading memories of when I used to lift when I was younger -- but even then I really hadn't known what I was doing.
I had an old beat-up bench, an EZ-curl bar, some dumbell shafts, and about 250 pounds of standard plates that my wife had salvaged years before from an abandoned rental. I did bench presses, rows, and deadlifts, but I couldn't squat and I was afraid to do overhead pressing, thinking I was taking it easy on my back. I hadn't done them when I was younger, either. I did upright rows and some bastardized version of lateral raises.
I did make a lot of progress, but it was more in spite of myself than from knowing what I was doing. I was losing weight and getting stronger where I could, but I was also in a lot of pain and was aggravating my elbows and shoulder joints. I'm pretty sure an injury was waiting for me just around the corner.
Last March, I stumbled across BodyBuilding.com, and joined soon after. I've learned a huge amount from this site, and although I still have a long way to go, my lifts have improved, my form has tightened up, I'm working more safely, and my aches and pains have pretty much disappeared. I don't know if I could have sustained my momentum, and I certainly couldn't have begun to take it to a higher level, without this site.
In June I got myself a 6' straight bar, and built a power rack to allow myself to do real squatting and overhead presses. In the next couple of weeks I'll be graduating to an Olympic bar and full-sized plates, as my deadlifts at least have moved beyond the capacity of the smaller bar. This has done a huge amount not only for my appearance and my energy levels, but for my entire outlook. I feel a lot younger than I did when I was a lot younger! Hopefully I can keep improving for a few more years at least.
So thanks to all of you, because you've had a lot to do with this.

EH, You are definitely a great example of the improvements a person can make with determination and willpower.
I think you have been an asset to this community, with intelligent, respectful, and insightful posts. You've managed to learn, and then turn around and teach...not simply by regurgitation things you've heard others say or things you've read, but by applying those things to yourself and then sharing the results and real life experiences with others.
