    will Squats improve My speed?

Just wondering as its an explosive exercise and will be making my legs stronger will it have any effect on my speed? Ino doing the jump squat can help but does jsut regular squatting?

I don't see why not. I'm thinking working squats and sprints simotaniously would increase your speed.

Are we talking long distance or sprints? It will help sprint times significantly and possibly long distance too, but I never do much long distance competitive running.

yes, squats will improve your speed and also your endurance, so they are good for both short distance (sprinting) and long distance (cross country running)

I got slower after 5 months of squats. Its simple, the more mass of something the slower it'll be. It'll help ur explosiveness but after that it will be slower. Just tretch and stay felxible, do running. This summer I'm going to bulk and gain some muscle, I'll be doing plyos and cardio like HIIT run and jumprope.

For sprinting...stronger is faster. If you gain mass (fat too) that may slow you down.

What I'd do and this what I am going to do is get all my lifts high. Try and get my sqquat 30 or 40 pounds past my BW, same for bench. Then I'll be doing plyos and cardio (Right now I'm cutting). My legs have grown 4 inches the last 6 months i have been squatting, had never squated before. M arms only 2 inches in 6 months. I lost speed but gained explosiveness. pushing off is all it'll help, u cant just squat and expect to get faster. You wanna how you get faster? By sprinting ur fastest. Same philosophy goes for lifting, if u want more fast twitch muscle fibers and muscles overall then lift heavy. u get faster by recruiting ur Fast twitch muscle fibers, only way to do that is running, and also plyos with good form.

I think it would be the opposite...

In terms of physics that is. The more mass = the more inertia = Faster speed.

I thought physics backed that up, which is why u dont want to bulk up with big arms for a sport like baseball. Why do you think boxers like Ali didn't lift weights. They didn't want to lose their quickness. It's a must to do explosive excercises and cardio to keep speed while lifting heavy.

I disagree with you partly there. I was told by a speed coach for the irfu (Irish rugby football union, hes one of the speed coaches for all the irish international teams from junior to senior and the munster team) That just doing sprints wont make you faster all it will do is improve your endurance and that plyometrics is the best wayto improve your speed.

Speaking of plyometrics you got any good plyometric routines?

I dont believe squats will make you faster, just by doing squats. For me, Im already pretty fast, but if i was to want to improve, i wouldnt JUST do squats. I would have to re-train my muscles by running constantly.

Yes for someone who is "slower", squats would be a great help, but if you want to get the best results for speed... Lift + run

yeh im just not doing squats, squats arej sut part of my routine and i was wondering if they would have any affect on my speed. Its one of my goals. Im just trying to get strong over the next 4 months then when summer hits, im going to focus on, increasing my speed.

squats will help with your speed. power cleans, power snatches, front squats, rdl, good mornings, glut ham raises, lunges also help a lot.
