Everyone involved knows it won't work. Since the idea was introduced publicly, the surgeon wants to hurry up and go through with it before someone else does it - making him the first in the world to attempt it on a human. He knows there's no chance of it working.

The patient will die soon anyways and this is a great alternative to doctor assisted suicide which he probably can't legally do. The surgeon probably knows this too and sees it as a win-win.

Its been documented those with heart transplants noticed new memories that werent theres but of the other person that the heart was from, along with some of there behaviors and preferences.
