Just got a new little toy for a night fishing companion...glock 42 380 pistol. Thinking about a clip on holster but would rather wear the gun outside the waist band. Most all of these seem designed to wear the holster inside your waist band and the clip attaches on the outside. If I bought a left handed IWB holster and used it as a right handed OWB holster would it work properly or do those holsters need to be inside the waist band to work?

I don't think it would work well like that, it would be flopping around since the clips that go over the waistband are plastic and kind of long. Try it at a store. I have a ruger .380 I usually use the small uncle mikes sleeve, and just put it in my pocket looks like a wallet and is out of the way. They are very unpleasant to shoot with the short bbl and tiny grips, but great for night fishing in questionable areas.

Sidearmor makes excellent OWB holsters for Glocks. https://www.sidearmor.com/
I haven't purchased anything from them for years, but they're a mom & pop business and I'm pretty certain they make both left & right handed models.
I don't see anything for the 42 listed on their site, but send them a message. They might be able to hook you up.

I have a paddle type holster for a ruger mark series .22 target pistol. Love it, it's adjustable friction fit (hard plastic like kydex), and stays out of the way. Usually use it when running trap lines and it holds the pistol very securely but easy to take out and put away. Plus it has a groove to accommodate a red dot sight.

i personally prefer the IWB holster style, however a friend of mine recommended this brand for comfort if you're going to go appendix or OWB

Here is one that De Santis just came out with this year for the Glock 42 that I just found. Not much info on it yet...http://www.desantisholster.com/C-H-A-M-P

I am partial to OWB holsters as well, I have two for my glock 19 that I use, one is good the other great. If I remember i will give the brand ont eh great one. I also much prefer leather to kydex or nylon...
I have a smaller handgun that I am trying an IWB on though, like I said I am not a fan, but recently I have lost 3 inches in the waist and all my pants and shorts are baggy enough that IWB may work out ok...

Crossbreed holster is another good one, Fish.
Even if I'm sweaty in the summer, the aroma of my ballz don't transfer to my pistol. I think the leather absorbs the odor. It's also comfortable IWB.This above all..

Got a couple holsters from Rawdog, one for my .380 and the purple one for the wifes LC9S Ruger. I had to go with green just in case of a zombie invasion. Also pictured is the Alien gear setup which is very comfy as well as an Uncle Mikes pocket holster.
