    Rubber ivankos. Please discuss

I have the chance to buy some rubber coated ivanko rubos for about 1.50 per pound. I read a bunch of threads comparing metal vs rubber plates. This includes the recent poster who was selling his rubber plates because he missed the sound of the metal plates while lifting. I have been searching for plates on CL for a month and not seen anything worth while (Yorks or ivankos). Now I know I'll be able to lift more with the rubber plates (ha ha) but any other discussion on this is appreciated.

I have seen some rubber coated revos in pretty bad shape around here. Might be due to the temps. I have also heard they stick together when hot.

My garage has been 98+ in the summer so I have avoided rubber coated plates.

New or used? I think those are the workhorse plates they sell to gyms, not particularly appealing IMO when you can just get bumpers now. I see them relatively cheap on CL. Someone recently bought the colored rubber coated revos and thought the finish was sub-par fwiw. I don't really get the collective boner for the revos here. Why not Cemco or InTek rubber or urethane coated for that price?

Plates are new and appear to be in good shape in the pics. These would go in our basement garage but it never gets too hot or too cold in there. Sticking together would not be good. I'm waiting for a quote for a power rack and some iron

when i think of owning rubber or urethane coated plates i worry about what happens when they get a rip or a tear, or when they stick, etc...it would mess with my OCD real bad...

i have bumper plates and i know they'll age and warp and whatnot eventually, but i didn't pay Ivanko prices either...

I've picked up two sets of OCBs used - one set off of CL, the other from Total Strength & Speed. Not sure if the rubos use the same material for a coating or not. My gym is in the basement (dry, constant temp) and I use SP80 on them every 6-months. At this point, they look better than the day I bought them. :-)

At the same time, I'm the only one using them and they are either on the bar (big 3 + oly lifts) or on the storage rack. I don't push them around on concrete do anything abusive -- didn't do that with my iron Ivankos either.

If the plates are what you want, you control the environment on how they are used, and are willing to spend the time taking care of them, I would go for it. If you are going to have a bunch of teens (example) rotating through your garage doing who knows what when you aren't around, I would pass.

I saw those posted earlier. For comparison, I paid $0.70/lb for my rubber IGX plates (same commercial quality, but these have grips while those Ivankos do not). In the Atlanta market, I wouldn't pay more than $1/lb for rubber. Here, the "fair" prices are generally $0.50/lb-iron, $0.75/lb-rubber, and $1.00/lb urethane. There are plenty of resellers here, so prices are less ridiculous.

Honestly, I think the Troy plates listed right now are the best deal. In fact, if you buy 720 lbs of them, I'll trade you my plates for them. I too miss iron.

I don't particularly care for the RUBO plates. In Atlanta there should be plenty of other opportunities.

I picked up some ivanko rubos from c.l. a few weeks ago @ .70/lb. I have them in my basement so not worried about them getting hot and sticking together. I was searching for some bumpers when I ran across them, figured I'd give them a try knowing the quality of the name. I mainly just use them for cutting down the noise on deadlift.

Can't help you much more than that with just a few weeks use.

Thanks to your post, I have carpal tunnel syndrome.
You need a good rack, a bench, and a 300-lb Olympic weight set. Now, what was your question?

    Got some

Well, they are dirty, a little smelly, and I have absolutely no use for them right now. But 265 pounds of them are mine.

Nice. I was down in Monterey this weekend and thought about picking these up, but didn't. Maybe someone else will want them. Pretty damn cheap.

Good work. Now clean them up. I can't recall but extrempullup bought some used ivankos and cleaned them up really nicely - I just can't remember what compound he used.....I think you have to look for silicone free.

I worked on one of the 5s last night. I used some pressure washer foaming car wash solution and a sponge which did not get in between the letters. I then used a wheel well brush which did ok. The bristles are not very firm. Followed by some Mother's or Meguires rubber cleaner/conditioner. My pressure washer is broken, otherwise I would try that. If
They do smell, like they have been in an attic for a while so I put them outside and will leave them there for a while even after I clean them
If the smell persists I may try some Simple Green, vinegar, sunlight, fabuloso, etc.
I expect it will take some work but they should look pretty good when I'm finished.

Most people are going to want Olympic not standard. You go to the aquarium?

Oh wow didn't even notice that. Yeah first time there. Pretty nice but a little smaller than I expected. The Aviary was bomb though.

    magic erasers are magical

I washed the rubber coated Ivankos with dishwashing liquid soap, and a bathroom brush with fairly firm bristles. I used a detailing brush that looks like a tooth brush to try to get in around the lip, letters, and numbers, The plates were still dirty. I then used a magic eraser as suggested, but had to get the pro versions from HD today. I also picked up some simple green. I re-cleaned the 45s, spraying them with water and the simple green, then working them over with the magic eraser. I again used the detail brush around the letters, but really needed to get in the spaces with the magic eraser. This rips up the magic eraser, but I have a box, just for this task. I am waiting for the sp80 cleaner and conditioner to arrive this week to finish them off. I included one pic of the 10s that I cleaned and conditioned without the magic eraser and it looks good. But I think I will clean them again.

This pic is after washing the plate with dishwashing liquid and a scrub brush. Like I didn't touch it.

    Plate meets Mr Magic Eraser

Looking clean. Mr Clean would be proud.
