Lol at meatheads trying to justify how lifting heavy is alpha. I had severe lower back pain recently, got an MRI and thank God it wasn't anything serious.
When I was lying in bed, not being able to stand up or walk properly. I thought to myself, health is one of the most important things in life, along with family.
Needless to say, I've learned my lesson and stopped lifting heavy. I try to lift sitting down as much as possible. There's nothing cool about breaking your back cause you tried to show off in front of random people or your buddies by lifting heavy.Ecclesiastes 6:10

you cant lift heavy, but if at 19 your joints already hurt...then good luck in 10 or 20 years
just be smart about it, focus on your form, leave the ego at the door
you are right, its all about slow progress and perfect form
but even with good form, doing shoulder press with 50 or 60 lbs can fuk up your rotator...the same with everything, sometimes chit just happensNI GALLINA NI BOSTERO, DEL ROJO HASTA LOS HUEVOS

lol some people negging me, so "alpha"
my point, some of you are probably genetic freaks and can lift very heavy and never get injured
but most of us, average guys, should be more cautious about it
good luck once you turn 60 and cant even play with your grand kids because your back hurtsNI GALLINA NI BOSTERO, DEL ROJO HASTA LOS HUEVOS

I completely agree OP, I was lifting my heaviest about 8 months ago, I was dealing with rotator cuff issues and muscle strains in my legs from deadlifts, they would not heal. Took a couple weeks off and began to go into a higher rep range, my body definitely doesn't feel as taxed when I'm done but I have no more shoulder issues and don't creek when I get out of bed. Lifting heavy just isn't worth the longer term effects.

I completely understand why so many of you *******s are scared of getting hurt from lifting hungry..
90% of people I see in the gym squat, dead, and bench with piss poor form.
I've squated 3 times this week, each time the other 2 racks were being used as well, by people with horrible form. I'm sure most of you people scared, are these same people.**MISC STRENGTH CREW**

I agree with OP completely - in the end everyone has to decide for themselves and we all have different bodies. I should have quit "heavy" lifting years before I did, but I'm glad I'm out of that mindset now and am not ashamed to do exercise that makes me feel better and heals my body.
Lifting (or whatever physical stuff) is fun but unless you're going to be competitive and leave a mark I'm not sure it's worth destroying your body and your future. The world really ****ing needs your 400lb DL, right? Age your joints thirty years in chasing it, then injure your back on another 1RM attempt. Wow so worth it.
I used to love it, though, full into the "more pain, more gain" lifestyle, making things as hard as possible regardless of the benefit and outcome. Definitely think it was foolish, but oh well. Some people just have to ruin their bodies one way or another, maybe if it wasn't lifting it would have been drugs or something.
Saying it's preventable by "using good form" doesn't really make sense, we all think we use good form and we're not idiots, **** still happens to the best-educated lifters there are. You can look back at an injury and say, "Oh, well obv he did something wrong," but that doesn't mean it was preventable or recognisable at the time. Brahs who've been lucky and not got injured, your time will come, dead srs.
And also it's more about the slow degenerative effect, not acute injuries. Past a certain age and a certain level of training it's all going to wear down your joints and be wholly degenerative, just like people who do manual labour and get 100% ****ed up. And we do it just for a hobby and ruin ourselves by choice, not even getting paid for it. Lifting is wholly degenerative for trained people, it's only going to lead to a "stronger" body if we're talking about previously untrained people, who may respond favourably to it.Could have been a slayer.

What's lifting heavy? I am currently in the 5 to 8 rep range, and it doesn't feel light, but my form is much more controlled than in the 1--3 range. When I was doing 12 reps of everything, I was suffering badly the day afterwards and had to cut the amount of training days to 2-3 a week (full body).
Sometimes I worry about my spine. But then I know guys who haven't lifted a thing in their life with busted backs and I think who are we kidding... if you are unlucky, you'll snap your **** up when getting into your car, and if you're lucky you'll still be taking the stairs two at a time when you're 80 even if you've lifted heavy for decades.
Edit: I realize it's going to take me another 10 years before I lift enough weight to really cause joint issues, but I still think about it.Old numbers, not as strong now :(
standing overhead press: 154 lbs
30deg incline bench press: 225 lbs
barbell reverse lunge: 269 lbs
weighted pullup: 261 lbs (total)
