Entered DEP about 6 months ago. Been off work for 2 weeks, have another 7 weeks left (of vacation and training) before leaving for Marines (Recon contract). *have a bunch of money saved up from Previous career
Been more motivated the past 6 months since deciding to enlist then I've been for my entire adult life.
Was making great money before, but phuck brahs, the slavery of the middle and upper middle class is not at all what I thought life would be like.
Brb get this free education
Brb live in exhilaration
Brb put my athleticism and training to the ultimate test
Brb be a warrior and regain my honor
Brb fight, train, swim, shoot, live for free and get paid to do it
Don't care about chit 20k starting salary, thought money would make me happy. Realized that making 60-80k year is not the crazy life changing money like I thought it would be when I was a teen. Unless your making 150k+ (probably more like 250k+) your life doesn't change, you can just buy slightly better things.
Only thing I will miss is being able to smash sloots on the reg, and hanging out with my friends and family a few times a week. In that order

Enlisted, if I still love it after my 5 and have decided against Law enforcement (which most likely won't happen as that's a big reason I'm joining as well) I will go officer
I owned a Semi truck (most recently) and did Trucking work
Also did Personal training on free time at commercial gym
Before that I was a plumber (srs)
I'm 25 man lol I've lived on my own since I was 17 (parents didn't believe in the whole support your kids after they are an adult at 18 thing) so doesn't really matter what they think, but they do support me.

No I was upfront with them when I walked in the doors, it went like this
"Here's my social, DL, credentials, send me to Meps for testing and physical."
After testing
"This is the job I want (infantry or Recon, I'd rather have recon in writing even though I know they give all infantry a shot) I'm not taking anything else"
Recruiter* "well we have this, this and this (not what I wanted) and you have to come in a few times a week and on some weekends for training and IST testing.
Me "I have a successful career and it takes up the majority of my time, I'll do an IST tomorrow, and every other month until I leave for boot, and I'm not coming back until I have the contract in writing"
Recruiter *the next day* "we don't have anything for infantry but we have 1 recon contract for October and we really think that your the only Polee that would be able to hack it (probably just saying whatever things) if you want it it's yours.
Me "great thank you sir I'll be there to sign it in the morning. Thanks for the opportunity."
Have only gone In for 1 IST as I blew it out the water and they know I'm training even harder since then. They don't waste my time because they know from the way I handled myself I'm not a lost soul without a brain or a moron who slips up and needs to be hand held.

My thinking is this-
just remember where and who you were at 17-20 years
Don't let the young guys wild mentality frustrate you and don't get in the habit of thinking *im to grown for this HS BS*. If you do, you will most likely be looked at as a D bag to the younger guys and a kiss a*ss
But also, don't act like the 17-20 year old kids or you will loose your advantage of maturity. Just remember who you were at the age and be smart, sharp, badass and fun but also be a leader and voice of reason for them.
It will be weird being 25 being treated like 18YO at boot camp I'm sure. But from what I understand it gets better when you hit fleet.Last edited by MurphDirtyX; 08-13-2015 at 12:37 AM.

Yeah man, it bothers me a lot.
In germany most recruits join right after the highschool which means I'll be at the boot camp with 17-18 YO kids. I'm afraid of feeling like a 40 year old going to elementary school.
I also joined college football team pretty late, cant stand 20 year old kids yelling at me but somehow I didnt quit.
Btw what did you mean by" just remember where and who you were at 17-20 years". Hows that gonna help?

If you're anything like me you're much more grounded and mature then when you were 17-20 (average age of the recruits that'll be in with you)
Don't let their nonsense and foolishness grind your gears and get at you because if you were them you'd be acting the same.
youll be fine brotha, I do think it's going to be a bit akward though at boot camp.
No ragrets lol

Same here joining the military (Chair Force). Tired of chitty civilian life. Maybe I'll take college more serious after my enlistment with more discipline, now I am just floating around. Kinda tired of working dead end jobs to support my college lifestyle when I can go travel the world, meet new people, get paid, free school, free housing, free food, etc. IMO best part is that the military pays you while you go to school with e-5 pay which is sick.

*no offense* but I'm not going into the military for a cushiony easy life, filled offices and paperwork and fake smiles and chit chats.
I'm going in to be tested and pushed to my limits, to Live breath and sleep excitement and challenge myself both physically and mentally.
I know and understand difference between AF boot and lifestyle and Marines boot and lifestyle. There's many reasons I chose Marines, and AC and nice treatment aren't one of them haha

I always wanted to join the marines. My dad told me college or army. I thought I had a chance at baseball but blew that. I still admire marines. That's what I would do if I Was just graduating. I'd be careful right now though because our leader has it out for you if you are a winner. Stay low but keep ears open.

I would congranulate you, but you haven't made it through basic yet.
You fuking worm.
However I can rep you for making the choice.
I joined the marines (UK) leaving my well paid job as an electrician and my party life behind.
Was the best decision I ever made.
Also it pisses in the face of the usual misc *******s who think that people only join the military as a last option.

I'll rep you if you clear and finish boot camp granted the Marines have changed since I was in (2002-2006) but I hope boot camp is still as tough as they claim it is. Good luck. I enjoyed my time in and would have gone career but after making Sgt I went to re-enlist and my MOS which at the time I had a primary of 0331 and secondary 8152, was full. If I had re-enlisted I would have had to take a new MOS which if I recall was demolitions and I laughed when they said and I quote " we dont have time to send you to school but you can OJT in Iraq....no thnxs jeff. New MOS, and being a sgt I didn't want to get anyone killed not knowing wtf I was doing. So just be careful loved the Corps but like anything in life it has its bad side. And now I've been a LEO for the last 8 years so it was worth it. And making detective next month which isn't for old people like you said (I'm 32). Also if you end up in Paris Island don't kill any sand fleas. You'll know what I mean if you do it and your DI sees it. Lol

Wow, i still have a hard wrapping my head about that kind of chitty treatment when you have given them 4 years already. Sounds like complete BS that they "didn't have room" like wtf, they couldn't turn down a few polees coming for the already trained marines or just wait a few months? Don't get it , but I least you landed the job you wanted on the outside that's awesome man. I heard of the killing of these bugs, someone told me you must make a burial for them or some chit LOL
It's nothing like army infantry. But elaborate, did you not enjoy your time in? Why
How do you know if you're civilian? Also where is this located and what makes it so badass bro?
I hear that it can be boring as hell in infantry but even worse case scenario I don't it, I will still feel badass serving my country in marine infantry
Been only hitting the weights 3 days a week and been focused on outdoor running, swimming, hiking and treding water.
Run 5 miles, tred water for 45 minutes, swim a 500 then body weight exercises at night and a 4-5 mile trail walk with weighted vest.
