Was listening to talk radio this morning on my way to work (I work in Connecticut now and my commute is roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on traffic) and the conversation was around social media and the affect it has on your real life.
The consensus was that most folks, (at least the folks that were calling in plus the radio personnel) that people attribute their social status worth on the number of likes they get on IG or FB. In fact most were saying if they posted a pic/topic and did not get any likes they would take it down, because it would be embarrassing. They equate it to tripping in front of a crowd and everyone snickering. if you are not liked in social media then you are not liked in real life.
They also stated if the pic/topic started a heated conversation between others that more than likely they would take it down because they (the person who started the thread/topic) don’t want to be viewed/associated as a negative person starting a controversial thread.
They said that in this day and age you are judge by your social media status ( number of likes, conversations started by you) more than anything else, from regular every day folks, to celebrities, to politicians, sports figures etc.
I don’t know about you guys, but I would NOT take down a pic or a topic because 1. I don’t get enough likes or 2. It caused a controversial/heated conversation.

I think it depends on the individual.. If one uses the support an attention as lets say their main drive then if it leaves you're screwed... However I live in the Midwest and locally we don't have the same fitness enthusiast crowd as Cali or warmer climates so through instagram i've been able to have that extra support and window into the lives of some of the greatest athletes ever that have attributed to my gains and success in progressing in the industry. It is a slippery slop tho I have to agree.

Social media is a love hate thing for me. I tend to open up about my life way too much. Just like on here.. You go from being looked at one way to another fast. I'm addicted to ********. Have been for years now. Socially in my real world it's nothing much. Outside of people knowing my thoughts and feels on things.
!!!!DONT LIKE ME?..DONT AGREE!!!...DONT CARE!!!!..."drops mic"...PEACEOUT!!!

Instagram is funny because if you have lots of followers and very few people that you follow, it is a sign of high status. It's ridiculous. Some of the younger women strive for this because it makes them feel like a sort of celebrity. Some will even follow a bunch of men so that they will follow them back and the unfollow them so that they have more followers than followees. It's hilarious.
But on the topic, I would be lying if I didn't say that I don't get a kick out of my FB statuses that get lots of likes , laughs or just good feedback. But that's all I get..a good kick. If something gets no likes, I would never be embarassed and take it down LOL that's just silly.Sept of Baelor was an inside job. Wildfire can't melt stone masonry.

I only have ******** because I send messages to folks in Finland. I do read the newsfeed sometimes but hardly post anything there.
Only time I get any likes is if I post a picture of my husband. When I told him this, he said "hate the game, not the player".
And no, I don't really care about "likes". I would worry if I got too many likes that something was wrong with me.
Also, lol at the instasloots Keltron mentioned. Their likes are probably not about their achievements or intelligence but prolly related to how many items of clothing is removed that day..soo. yeah, not so much relevant to anything meaningful.

No social media for me.
For me, the potential downsides FAR outweigh any potential benefits. If you have any kind of public profile in the real world, a throw away comment that you make on social media can quickly turn in to an avalanche of crap landing on your doorstep.
I don't even post pics or vids on here, for precisely that reason.Screw nature; my body will do what I DAMN WELL tell it to do!

Who is derailing anything? Social media comes with a price. And one price is that if you spout hateful views in public it tends to result in your being justifiedly unpopular. As you have repeatedly pointed out, you don't care. Bully for you.
But the thread is about whether other people do care.
I don't care very much if people "like" my occasional posts on FB. I use it to keep up with friends and family abroad mostly. But one has to be careful about what appears, as Duracell says, or a world of pain can result, especially if you have any public profile. And things can be easily misinterpreted online.☻/

Not sure if serious? Exactly what would you call this forum if not social media?
I moderate a couple different pages on FB and one of them is a Mustang site, you would not believe the number of people who will bitch and moan because they post a pic of their car and get a dozen or even 50 likes. The reason they bitch is because some hot chick can post a pic of her and her car...even if the car is a piece of crap...she will get 300-400+ likes easily. They base their self worth on how many likes they get as if they can cash them in at the FB store for anything?"You know that little thing in your head that keeps you from saying things you shouldn't? Yeah, well, I don't have one of those."

This is a bulletin board; not what is conventionally termed "social media". Bulletin boards/message boards typically allow you to stay one step removed from many of the cooler platforms. Unlike many platforms, bulletin boards don't install things on your computer/device and are far less graphic-centric.
To put it another way, a forum only crosses the line in to social media when it's all ME ME ME threads, of which we have some, but they are limited to certain posters.Last edited by DuracellBunny; 07-30-2015 at 04:35 PM.

I'm not really sure what IG is, but I think it's basically pics?
One thing I notice on FB is that I'll get a bunch of likes for a vid of a lifting PR. If I post a physique type pic I won't get many at all. Guess I should stick with lifting heavy and not trying to look pretty.Don't put that on me Ricky Bobby, don't you ever put that on me.

I dont even know what a social media status is.
I have a ******** acct but dont post anything on it. I just use it to keep track of the kids and grandkids.
I would not know if i had any likes or not."To be a warrior is not a simple matter of wishing to be one. It is rather an endless struggle that will go on to the very last moment of our lives. Well EB answered this very well and I agree with him. I'll just add that I don't come on here to update my body space religiously, I'm not hung up on who likes my progress pics (I often don't think about adding more until someone sends me a message asking me where's the new pics), I RARELY make posts, and I'm not especially open about who I am IRL. So that's why I don't really see this like I do FB or IG, etc.
