Is there a "macrophotography" thread?
Looking for tips and recommended gear. I use my S9+ and an Olympus TG4 w/ LED ring.
I plan on shooting insects, spiders, etc. I read a bit about stacking images but it seems confusing. I'm a photography noob.

Just phone photos, need to bring the Nikon with me when I go to the woods, just easier to leave it behind. Product testing, working on product photography as well.
Love this shot, try to re-create similar ones often, the background contrast between left and right is hnng to me.
Start of June, looking at a week long redwoods drive around Northern Cali, much excite. Would like some new glass before the trip, but I bought a gun and more axes instead.Rugby Crew

Is that the only downside? I've heard good things about the 6500, it's a pretty cheap high quality camera. So do Sony lenses not fit all Sony cameras? That's kind of lame. I'd like to get the A7iii but saving the extra cash would be nice
I dont plan to become a real photographer. I'm just starting to get into it. It will just be a side hobby★☆★ Full-Time Philadelphia Eagles Fan ★☆★

The body itself is good, but bodies change all the time. Sony doesn't make any lenses for it's APS-C line. It's the whole ecosystem you're buying into, mainly the lenses. If you're undecided, I'd strongly recommend waiting a year or so to see what Canon and Nikon come out with to compete with A7III, and take photos with what you own right now.

just pulled the trigger on the sigma 14-24 2.8, my 24-70 has been my bread and butter but do miss going wide angle (non fisheye shots lol). Sigma has won me over with build quality as well as the awesome price points.

Up to you, Ive got both and love both.
If youre first starting, id probably recommend mirrorless.
You can see what the picture will look like before you take the picture - makes factoring exposure a lot easier.
They are also generally smaller and lighter than a slr.
Imo, I feel mirrorless is gonna take over the market and slr will be a thing of the past.

How long will you be there? If it's for 1-2 weeks I'd concentrate on fewer locations so you increase your chances of getting some shots in good light not to mention you often have to scout a location and return to it a few times to get the right composition. Was there in August last year and I'm going again this winter.
Highlights for me were Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo.
Happy to go into more detail about specific locations there. I would spend at least 3 nights at both.
Milford Sound is always worth visiting but I spoke to someone who operates cruises out of there and he said he sees on average a couple of clear days a fortnight. I've never experienced a clear day like you see on the postcards with Mitre Peak but I think it's pretty special when it's raining but that's more about the experience rather than being ideal for photography. You'd need some kind of rain jacket for your camera and a cover for your bag if it's not waterproof.
It's a 5hr+ drive from Queenstown but it's one of the most incredible places on the planet so if you have time it's worth visiting and taking a 2-3 hour day cruise. Fire it up in 4K...

Can I get some pointers on taking portrait photos?
Specifically, a picture of someone from the chest up. The purpose is to show the person and not the environment. Kind of like those portraits of actors that casting directors would look at to see if they fit the required looks
I'm assuming I should use a normal wall as a background. But what else in terms of lighting, angles, camera settings, lens, etc?★☆★ Full-Time Philadelphia Eagles Fan ★☆★
