I used to train each bodypart three times a week (arnold method, upper body then lower body six days in a row) and made only little gains. Then I switched to each bodypart two times a week (upper body, lower body split still) and made some more gains but still not much. But about three months ago I switched to 3 out of 9 days training (upper body, lower body split) for a half hour each workout and have made the most gains like that.

training twice a week
if you go back to arnolds day .you see teens were training bodyparts twice a week . today the thinking has changed .for recovery, one day a week
is the approach . for someone just starting out
i would have them dive the body parts into two groups and do what they call an everyother day split routine . every other week your hitting the muscle group twice that week .
once your motoring along in your lifting and if your serious about it then you would progress to two days on one off routine . if you need a routine e-mail me

Unless your on juice your body can't possibly recover from a heavy workout twice in one week
Arnolds day of training things two three times a week were wrong. Even Arnie will admit that. Medicine, and Exercise Physiology standards have greatly advanced since the 60's, and 70's (Arnie's day). Back then, It was thought that the more you trained, the bigger the gain. We know today that you grow while you rest, not working out.
I will go as far as to say Arnie hindered his own growth by overtraining. Steroids and superior genetics saved him................When you think about it, it's kind of scary to imagine Arnie with an even BETTER physique.................Last edited by Paul21; 11-07-2001 at 08:07 AM.

Yes, any training you will see gains from at the beginning.........but like you said you plateaud, then adjusted. I used to do everything twice a week (except legs) 8 years ago. I didn't however gain 40 lbs of lean mass in a year. I doubt you did too naturally, but I am not going to debate you in that......I gained @ 20lbs in ten months, then I learned how to train. Since then I have gained another @35lbs......if I trained properly from the start my gains would have been better.

It has nothing to do with a placebo. When you first start working out, and your muscles are not used to being worked, they can recover amazingly fast. When I first started working out I benched and curled everyday, and still put on a little mass.

I did a few weeks of twice a day. I was experimenting to see exactly what would make me feel overtrained. I did a heavy low rep in the morn and then in the evening I did a regular workout. After a few weeks I felt like **** and tired and run down. I slowly reduced the amount until i found the ideal plan. Once a day 4 times a week.

way back the thinking was work a muscle group twice a week .many had good gains from it .especially if they had good genetics .current thinking is you hit a body part once a week ,but the workouts should be intense and to failure . aim for 9 to 12 working sets per body part .a working set does not include your warmups .programs to look at include
german volume training , mad cows 5 x 5 .just google these

I hit everything twice a week, tried hitting them once a week but did nothing for me, i personally think its down to genetics, if your diet and rest is nailed i see nothing wrong with training twice a week. It's worked for me. Id suggest though a lower intensity, i only tend to do one exercise per body part per workout, too much more and you wont have fully revovered for the next training session. If it works for you, it works, stick to it
