That is pretty ridiculous. I know there is generally an increase, since people underestimate how many boxes they need and crap like that, but a 100% price increase? Yeah I'd be annoyed there.

I didn't estimate it, they had a guy come out and survey all of our stuff and he provided the estimate. So yeah 100% more than they estimated is absolutely garbage business.

Is it cheaper to move it yourself?

Far cheaper than $8,000. My guess is only a couple thousand (after buying a trailer to tow with my truck, using the trailer, and reselling it in WA). The trailer would cost me $500-$1500 to resell and then there's gas money but I'm already driving anyway so it's only the gas increase for towing vs. not towing.

But I wouldn't doubt it if moving companies do this on purpose. You agree to the price and then it is moving day and you're pretty much stuck with your pants around your ankles, so you give in and pay the tab.

Renting a trailer in Alaska to drive it to Vancouver (we looked into this) is actually just as expensive, if not more, than simply buying one, say 24', 7000lb rated, on Craigslist and reselling it in PDX. It's just that most people don't have the cash floating around to buy a trailer for that purpose... however we just closed on the house and have some funds, enough to make this work.
