I currently live and teach at an international high school in China prepping relatively wealthy Chinese students to enter and cope at Western universities. Tuition at the school I teach at is about $15K/semester. For high school.

The vast majority of my students come from relatively wealthy households, but many of them are just middle-class Chinese whose parents are sacrificing everything they have for the betterment of their children. I would say that on average, they work slightly harder than average American high schoolers.

OP is right though in that A LOT of the Chinese international students that you see in the West these days are from wealthy parents and backgrounds. These aren't "average" Chinese by any stretch of the imagination. I live here in China and the average Chinese makes sh*t for pay.

Many of them doctor their grades and GPA, spend most of their waking time prepping and studying for IELTS/TOEFL/SAT and doing little else and often times after they get into uni, spend boatloads of $ to have their papers and projects written by private writing companies.

It's a huge joke and the sad thing is back home many Western unis are relying on this international (read; CHINESE) cash due to super high tuition so they look the other way. The uni gets their $$$ and the Chinese get their bought degree that will impress all their friends and family back home because here in China, American uni degree = RESPECT. Doesn't matter how you get it.
