Safety net programs: About 11 percent of the federal budget in 2014, or $370 billion, supported programs that provide aid (other than health insurance or Social Security benefits) to individuals and families facing hardship. Spending on safety net programs declined in both nominal and real terms between 2013 and 2014 as the economy continued to improve.
These programs include: the refundable portions of the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit, which assist low- and moderate-income working families through the tax code; programs that provide cash payments to eligible individuals or households, including Supplemental Security Income for the elderly or disabled poor and unemployment insurance; various forms of in-kind assistance for low-income families and individuals, including SNAP (food stamps), school meals, low-income housing assistance, child care assistance, and assistance in meeting home energy bills; and various other programs such as those that aid abused and neglected children.

So of this 11 percent, what percent are non-deserving leeches? And remember, this 11% includes more than just "welfare".

Let's look at Social security. 100% of the people who work for a living would be better off, more often than not, putting their money into an account that earns 3%. At least then they woulnd't be getting the guaranteed negative return SS promises.
However, SS is required because it is needed to provie for those who don't want to save money - and for the people with a doctors note saying that their minor arthritis prevents them from working any job.. I.E. welfare.
medicare/aid is similar - paying for those who don't/can't pay for it. thus prices for insurance skyrocket for everyone else.
it is cute to say "10%" goes to welfare, and then use democrat rhetoric to explain away the rest.

Incorrect
Over 50% of the budget is for Welfare, SS, or Medicare/Medicaid which are all forms of welfare assistance, not just income supplementation programs which are about 10% alone.
In terms of the Defense budget, an extremely small % is spent on aiding foreign nations. The vast majority of it over the last 10 years has been on R&D and procurement.| ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄ ̄|

When you label every non-defense program as "welfare", then it may seem that way, lol. By these definitions, how is Defesne not included in welfare? It's nothing but handouts for foreign nations. We spent over a trillion in Iraq. They didn't pay for it, WE did. We give handout to other countries, and subsidize their militaries.
Point blank, anyone who makes the argument that Soc. Sec is welfare, but think defense is separate is delusional.6'3 Master Race

NINE MYTHS THE RIGHT LOVES TO BELIEVE ABOUT WELFARE
http://www.ifyouonlynews.com/politic...-about-welfare
Myth #1: People on welfare are lazy and sit at home collecting it while the rest of us work to support them.
Myth #2: People who go on welfare stay on it forever.
Myth #3: Theres a woman in Chicago. She has 80 names, 30 addresses, 12 Social Security cards. Shes got Medicaid, getting food stamps and she is collecting welfare under each of her names. Her tax-free cash income alone is over $150,000″ Ronald Reagan
Myth #4: Welfare recipients keep having more kids so they can get more benefits.
Myth #5: Where Is The U.S. Headed If More Than 100 Million People Get Welfare? Headline of August 2012 column by CNNs Jack Cafferty
Myth #6: I see these guys all the time, hanging out and drinking, and doing drugs, collecting welfare instead of working.
Myth #7: Most welfare recipients are drug users.
Myth #8: Most welfare recipients are minorities and illegal immigrants.
Myth #9: People collect welfare instead of work, and they get rich. They all have iPhones, drive new cars, have widescreen tvs, etc. I work and I cant afford any of that!

I guess no one ITT ever took an economics class. What do welfare recipients give back? Their money. Every penny they get goes back into the economy. Our economy is driven by consumer spending, fyi. When people spend, jobs are created, which creates more consumer spending, which creates more jobs, which creates more consumer spending.
This is basic stuff.
Myth busting time: The rich are not "job creators." The people who go to target every saturday and spend their entire paycheck are. I chit you not fellas.
I don't mean to break your hearts, but the poor and middle class drive the economy, not the rich. Do you know why? Poor and middle class spend everything they have. The rich? They save, and invest, which is good for them, not so much for a system that lives or dies by consumer spending. Especially considering that investment nowadays is increasingly going overseas--the wealthy investment class is literally sucking wealth out of our country and putting it in other economies.
But lol guys, don't worry about any of this. Just keep voting for "free market" fanatics and I am sure it will all work out eventually.Last edited by BieberFeverBrah; 06-08-2015 at 10:58 PM.

I want an easier life, period. Now, for me, that means keeping the fruits of my labor and as Scuba explained, investing that money in a modest-high return system instead of a guaranteed poverty check via SS. The problem is that there are plenty of people who view welfare as an "easier life", when it's anything but. Granted, you can sit on your ass and collect a check, but it hardly enhances quality of life. Something has to be done , and I'm not talking about eliminating welfare, but reforming it to crack down on fraud and making sure those truly in need get a temporary helping hand (or permanent help if seriously disabled).
