Anyone on here have equipment on a 2nd floor or have a 2 story garage or steel building at home as a gym? How much could a second floor of a steel building support? My fiance wants our garage back, and theres enough room in our back yard for a 20 x 24 foot building. I figure if Im gonna put something back there, go big! Any info and/or pics of your setup/examples is greatly appreciated.

My gym is on the upper level of my 24x24 garage. It is all in one bay of the garage (for now), and I've never once worried about the structural integrity of it. The garage has a full daylight basement beneath it. The top floor is supported by 3 large I beams running left to right with thick (unsure of the gauge off the top of my head) corrugated steel on top of that. The concrete floor was then poured on top of the corrugated steel.
I have had about 6-7,000 pounds of weight and equipment in that space before with no worries. Im not too worried about the static loads though. I do try and space the bulk of my weights over support beams however. Constant slamming of 800 pound deadlifts between the supports might cause problems...[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #72 []---[]

If it's built properly, you'll have zero issues with it. Mine is about 25'x50' room on the second floor of my garage as seen in that post. I've probably 2k+ lbs Ivanko plates, two full bumper sets, random crap weights up there, Sorinex Base Camp loaded up with lots of stuff, full 5-100lb DBs, Elite FTS 4 full stack jungle machine, Pit Shark, Elite GHR, Sorinex Tib/Calf, Reflex Donkey Calf, Rogers Hip Press and Neck machine, Cybex Functional trainer, Cybex Arc Trainer, C2 rower, Airdyne, plyo boxes, 6+ bars and 2-3 commercial benches and other stuff.
I've had no problems with it. I've since reinforced the floor with some extra support, but that was just my own mind..there wasn't really a need to do it.My home gym thread: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=133276333

That's a pretty epic garage. I built a 20x50 versatube metal garage. It gets the job done but next time I will go wood or red iron I-beam metal. Mine was fairly expensive, I can only imagine how much that one cost. Next house hopefully I can find a house that already has a huge garage. Much cheaper and less work that way!!!

I am looking at building a large two story outbuilding dream gym in the next year or two as well. My 2200 sq foot walk out basement is full and wife wants to finish basement and get equipment out. In trying to design the building I am trying to figure out how to make a way to design the building in a way to get my equipment to the second floor (selectorized pieces, leg presses, etc) when it doesn't break down. I see mroc17 has stairs outside the garage that accesses the second floor. I am just trying to think of ways to access second floor of building to allow for passage of larger pieces.
