I'm looking to add one of the two to my supplements (only one because I don't want to spend a whole lot of money). I workout under one of two conditions: 1) right when I wake up, fasted, just drinking a ton of water, or 2) in the middle of the day (around 2 ish after my classes), after eating something like a Quest bar an hour and a half beforehand. Under both conditions I'm working out without a true "pre workout snack" so sometimes I feel like I could use something to get me through my workout (especially when I'm working out fasted). AFter I workout, I take PEScience Whey and ON Creatine with soy milk, or in a smoothie with banana and spinach.
My workouts consist of a 10-15 minute HIIT warmup, followed by stretching, then moderate-heavy weightlifting (usually in the form of supersets). Sometimes I'll go lighter on the lifting then do a Crossfit style workout after. In total I'm in the gym for about 70-90 minutes.
So should I add a pre or an intra? Which brands are best (for a woman, especially)?

A preworkout would be much more beneficial in your case, especially since you're getting some nutrition in after you workout.
Some good preworkouts are:
White Flood
Fierce Domination*
Assault*
Ritual*
just to name a few.
The ones with asterisks already have creatine in them so you wouldn't need to take any additional after your workout.Army Vet (11A)

Be sure to check out our FitMiss line! Either the Ignite or BCAA's would be a solid option.
Scream would also be a solid option like Emergency mentioned.~Veni Vidi Vici~

I'd go with the preworkout, maybe have a look at True Grit Pre - http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/true-grit/pre.html
Some others worth checking out would be Neon Volt and Muscletech Anarchy. Something lower-mid stim is better for longer workouts imo, so those pretty well fit the bill.💪💪💪Dirty South Crew💪💪💪

Thanks
Op,
You would probably be fine without either, but if your looking for an intra xtend is a great option, or xtend endurance. And if you want a pre check out scivation psycho.
Or like has been mentioned bb.com scream has both bcaa and a well dosed pre in one, so that's a good option as well___----Xtend Representative----___

Personally, if I were choosing between a pre and an intra, I'd go with a pre. Especially with those morning workouts, the stim-kick is nice.
Some of my favorites that are on the moderate to high stim side (since you said you're not sensitive to caffeine):
Neogenix Neurosurge 3.0: 300mg caffeine, plus ALCAR and huperzine for focus, 1g agmatine for pump, etc (on sale until the end of today for $20 for 30 servings)
iFN Max Out: 300mg caffeine, GMS and nitrates for pump, rhodiola, huperzine, and DMAE for focus, etc ($36 for 30 servings)
CL WFR: 250mg caffeine, proprietary blend with betaine, LCLT, citrulline, etc (discontinued to be replaced by White Rapids so it's on BOGO)Olympus Labs Representative

if the choice came only down to one product, it would be a pre-workout.
Scivation psycho has 60 scoops making dosing protocol very customizable for how you feel/what you need for that workout. Great focus and great energy!

If you decide on a BCAA instead, scivation xtend is a very solid choice with 7g of bcaas, 2:1:1 ratio, 11 great flavors, and numerous bb.com awards and vast amount great feedback. It also contains electrolytes for better hydration and citrulline malate for a little added endurance.

Might be perfect for you even at less than the full serving. It is B1G1 50% off right now and they just put up the new Rainbow Sherbert flavor. Win all around.

You may want to try a pre-workout such as MusclePrime, which features BCAAs and a fairly moderate amount of caffeine, so it shouldn't be overwhelming on an empty- or near-empty stomach.

personally if i was doing my workouts fasted i would need something to give me energy so i would got with a pre workout that was heavy stim. all the companies would recommend their pre workout which is fine. efx carries freak maker shock which is has a decent amount of stim. aside from efx pre workout c4 by cellucore is pretty stim heavy and is a very popular pre workout.
also since you are training fasted bcaas would be beneficial so an intra might be ideal choice as well.Team Representative for Formutech Nutrition

If you are training more fasted i would look for something that is BCAA based to help switch the catabolic switch after an overnight fast. If you are training fed a pre-workout would be more ideal.
Do you have a fishoil or multivitamin? i see your creatine and protein are covered those would be far more important than a pre-workout or intra-workout product.
I would opt for something like Cellucor C4, Scivation Psycho or Neon Volt for a great all around pre-workout
if you want a higher stim pre-workout Conqu3r, Max HP, Scream, White Rapids/Steel Edge (Soon to be released) will be good options.

This^^^ since you workout in the morning sometimes and in the afternoon other days I would buy a pre-workout that covers all angles to be safe over a intra
Scream
Pre Jym
Out Lift
Wreckage
All of these have caffeine + at least one pump ingredient +BCAAs (or at least leucine) + ingredients for focusVELOCITY NUTRITION

Preworkout would be what I would go with. Our product Anarchy is on bogo and is awesome with energy, pumps, with a little bit of focus.

First and foremost, pre workout meal is always advised. If due to scheduling difficulties and this is not viable (I train basically minutes after the gym opens, so I fall into the category of scheduling difficulties thus I skip breakfast), at least get some protein/aminos + carbs in your preworkout and possibly intraworkout.
Does it have to be supplements? Pre workout meal is an actual meal obviously. Immediately before a workout and if you so choose during your workout, I would recommend combining some amino acids (EAAs preferably, with a good dose of leucine in it) + carbs that you can tolerate and not weight you down (some people dextrose works fine, I like Karbolyn and HBCD). You can get aminos and carbs separately and mix them together yourself or you can go with a comprehensive product designed for such purposes such as Intra-MD.
Now, if you are strictly looking for an energy and focus booster for your workout, a stimulant based preworkout is designed for such purposes (good ones that I like and continue to use are: C4, Jekyll, and Max-HP).Completed Logs & Reviews:

I think its best to invest in a good preworkout. I don't know about you but I like a good boost right before my workout.
I use Freak Maker Shock and I use anywhere from 1/2-1 serving depending on my workout

Is her nutrition lacking or is she training fasted? Not the same thing. If you get a meal in shortly after your workout, even fasted training (lacking even BCAA's) is not going to cause any major issues.
That said I do like to have BCAA's if I train fasted so i usually op for Scream.I'm the clever one, you're the potato one.

Do you feel you need an energy "pick me-up", if so I'd recommend a pre workout like EFX Freak Maker Shock, or do you feel you need something to sustain you through the workout, if that is the case I'd recommend an intra soemthing like EFX Karbolyn with Core Nutritionals Core ABC

OP, as others have mentioned, I'd also recommend picking up a Pre-workout. I work out first thing in the morning and need that caffeine boost to get going. BUT BE WARNED, you'll never wanna go back to working out without one ;P !
Haha, I absolutely love taking PWO's, and there are many great products on the market to try. I'd recommend on trying a few different ones, and find out what ingredients/products work best for you!Myprotein's Official Bodybuilding.com Lead Representative ✔

Hey OP - pre-workouts are always great. Especially when you're fasted as that is when you'll feel them the most. You can find some that will help with your energy and a little bump in endurance like ErgoBlast. It's also B1G1 as bigdumguy mentioned above
However, if you're trying to stay stimulant free (not a bad option if you currently are stimulant free.. it's a downhill slope) then a BCAA product before and/or during your training would be a good choice. Also B1G1 ErgoChain is probably the best value per serving on the market right now for BCAAPicking things up and putting them down since '09
