The federal government isn't going to be able to regulate what gear individual police departments are using. Anyone who thinks anything is going to change is delusional. At the most the Feds will stop giving individual police departments free military gear. But this is HIGHLY unlike as places that are deemed high risk for terrorist attacks have been getting good sh!t since 9/11. Nobody has known about it. (Know some guys who are on a SWAT team where several large oil reserves are. They get tons of funding/toys from the feds).
Simply put, better equipment is needed to deal with the increasing threat. We've got guys running around with body armor and AR's and Ak's now shooting up schools and places of business. We will NEVER return to an age where officer friendly rolls up wearing his milk cap with his revolver on his side to deal with that.
Sorry Obama but the streets of America are a literal warzone. They are far worse now then they ever were during the "Wild west" that America is so famous far. And they have been for decades. Police have been using military tech since the 20s (that I'm aware of). Its only become thrust into the public eye due to the recent riots and media coverage. We've went from the BAR and Tommy gun to full body armor, APC's, and AR15s/Mp5's. At the very most sh!t will be kept hush hush until a major incident happens then the big guns will come out again.
The ONLY way any of this could happen is if the federal government takes massive gun/body armor control steps and passes a chit ton of legislation which regulates civilians far more then how police departments would be regulated. And that isn't gonna happen because nobody wants more feds in their lives.

I agree with this partially. There are times and place when military style gear definitely is needed by police. They should have it, but shouldn't be able to bring it out for these god damn no knock raids they do.
Ferguson? Baltimore? Yeah... give them mrap's and other ****, LRAD and all that good stuff.Fantasy Football Team (1ppr) - http://i.imgur.com/o4i4xs3.png

You realize that there was probably a meeting with the military where they informed him that certain types of weaponry is inefficient and different types should be used, then it was used as a positive PR stunt even though it was going to happen anyway.
This way he gets the funding for the retrofits AND gets to appeal to his liberal base.

Your talking about the same cops that would beat the fxck out of someone and leave them in a ditch on a regular basis? The same guys who's pull out tommy guns and BARs (WWII weapons) and just riddle a car full of rounds and kill all of the occupants? The same cops who regularly burned down establishments to deal with the occupants inside? The guys who'd pistol whip someone for looking at them sideways then just walk away?
LE are far more tame/legal now then they've EVER been. Anyone who thinks the good ole boys in suits carrying a .38 were the end all be all of LE you've got to be joking. There was little regulation of LE at that time and nothing to prevent corruption or brutality. Police are FAR more professional now then ever. Again, increased threat= increased LE armament.
Maybe if civilians didn't have body armor and AK's and weren't going shoot up schools, movie theaters, etc. then police wouldn't have all the tools that they do. Simple fact of the matter are civilians are armed more then ever and have the potential to do more damage then ever. And police have to be able to handle those threats.
I'm not arguing for gun control and the disarming of civilians (keep your AR's and AK's). But on the same token quit whining about "Police militarization."

You arent having a debate, you have a mystical ball that forsees the future. Also FYI its not militarization of the police its having proper equipment to combat the chit storm people use against them.... But you are right the next time their is an active shooter somewhere cops can just stand down and wait for the military to arrive, because heavens forbid they wear exterior vests with ballistic plates and ballistic helmets and resemble the milirltary....

What a ****ing joke. How many "civilians" shoot up schools and theatres? The reason people are so on edge is because their is an antagonistic relationship with the government/cops and the people, the tension keeps rising...what's the solution, help people and deal with them reasonable like in the UK and Europe? Nah, just shoot the bastards right? They're just "civilians", it's us vs them after all!!1
