I believe these red plates are 25kg Yorks. The blues are definitely 20kg. I know the guy who owns this full York kilo set.

They are 25KG plates, and the blues are 20KG plates. You should get some more pictures. . . .

BTW, I know a guy who has two full York KG sets, the complete set of 80s KG bumpers, and the iron 25 and 45 KG plates. . . . . He isn't interested at the moment in putting together the 70s bumper set at this time.

Just out of curiosity, if you were to take 100 lb standard York plates and bore them out to 2" center holes, what would the weight difference be?

I actually calculated it and posted it somewhere.... maybe in part I. The difference is pretty negligible.

Can't sleep so lets do some geometry

v = pi * r^2 * h

The volume of a 2 inch cylindrical hole w/ a 1 inch height is 3.14 in^3

The volume of a 1 inch cylindrical hole with a 1 inch heigh is 0.79 in^3

The difference in volume = 2.35 in^3

Googled the density grey cast iron = 0.252 lb/in^3

Multiply the density by the difference in volume calculated above...

So... the value is 0.5922 lbs per inch height...

and that means the difference is 0.59 lbs for a 1 inch thick plate...
0.89 lbs for a 1.5 inch thick plate...
and 1.2 lbs for a 2 inch thick plate

Feel free to check my math (it's late)

I should also mention that....
It's a bit of an over estimate since the standard hole size is over 1" and the olympic hole size is less than 2".

I think we could probably get a pretty good approximation by measuring the plate's diameter and calculating the area in square inches with the 1" hole then doing the calculation with a 2" hole. This will allow us to calculate a ratio which we can multiply by the original weight and give us a pretty good number, not exact as the plate will vary in thickness over it's surface.

Basically, I'm thinking we don't need to know the density of the iron. We can calculate from measurements of the actual plate.

Thanks mb. There was a time when I was in the top of my class in math, and I would've knocked out that calculation no problem, but my brain is fried now. Looks like that would drop it pretty damn close to 45kg (99.2 lbs). Sounds like a decent alternative since I know I'll never actually come across a pair of those 45kg plates.

Ok here goes.

Assuming the diameter of the plate is 17.75", the surface area of the plate is calculated as follows:

pi*(17.75/2)^2 - pi*(0.5)^2 = 247.449 - 0.785 = 246.664 sq in

100 lbs / 246.664 sq in = 0.4054 lbs per sq in

the surface area removed would be pi*(1)^2 - pi*(0.5)^2 = 3.1416 - 0.785 = 2.3562 sq in

2.3562 sq in * 0.4054 lbs per sq in = 0.95522 lbs removed

100 - 0.95522 = 99.0448 lbs

Of course that's assuming the plate is exactly 100 lbs, the holes are exactly 1" and 2", and the thickness is the same throughout the plate.

I am in Southern California (includes bar, 4x45lb (deep dish lathed), 2x35lb, 2x25lb, 2x10lb, 2x5lb, 2x2.5lb, 2x5lb (shipwheel collars)).

I get ya. I did not know. The guy I bought them from was the original owner who brought the set with him from the east coast in 1956. His son told me whatever I do to keep the set together. I figure a York forum would be the best place to find someone who will appreciate the set. It is the complete set as purchased in the 1950s.
