i also feel that games are really going downhill nowadays. i think this is mainly because of games starting to cater to people who can only put in so much time. the truly greatest games were definately the real MMORPGs not some half assed mmo they produce nowadays.
games like ultima online and diablo 2 for example are still WAY better compared to MMO's today. play style and strategy wise those games are still way ahead of their time. if you took diablo 2 and remodeled it completely and put in the money they put in diablo 3, its only to imagine what beast of a game they could've created lasting for another decade or two.
also take ultima online renaissance for example. if you look at the idea of the game, game style, pvp and pve system, there simply is no game comparing to this, its not even close. sadly *******s prefer to plaY **** games with better graphics instead of quality games.
look at wow too for example. GOAT game when it actually was really hard. nowadays, you can get everything in the game with 2 hours of playing a week or so ? i mean everything has its pros and cons, however it robs the game of its real spirit. jsut my honest opinion.
ultimately, looking at the current state of development, ego shooters and dota clones will be the future as long as some firm doesnt produce the next WoW or something similar

because publishers know they can hype a game with lies, pay for reviews, sh*t out a broken game, claim that patches and dlc will fix everything, wait a month for all the 12 year old sheep to buy the game, then close down the studio and start the cycle again
as long as people pay for broken games, they'll keep making broken gamesWe're All Gonna Make It, Brahs

Cracked did a good article on this. I think they made a really good point that the people actually in charge of game development that make the creative decisions are the executives that probably don't even play video games, instead of the developers who know what people want in a game.

Because its all about the profit. Triple A games have been guilty of massive hype, then total letdown upon release because of
-lack of content/finishing touches therefore less work done = more profit
-cutting content to later put into a paid DLC
simple as that. Dragon Age inquisition was a great game this year though!!! tons of content

I wouldn't say they're now totally sh*tty. It's just been a pretty dry year and a half or so. There's plenty of promising games due to come out within the next 2 years.
