Oh sorry, didn't notice you there:
Halo games are still killing it. Amazing soundtrack, campaign is basically a movie now, multiplayer is debatable but Halo 5 beta was the first time halo has been genuinely fun for me every single time I pick up the controller since Halo 3.
In the beginning of Halo 2, the duality between the Arbiter and the Master Chief is forever burned into my memory.
Also the Arkham games are amazing.

They basically became too bloated and expensive to make. And any difficulty was stripped out 90% of games by the time the PS3 generation started. Also multiplayer pretty much killed single player (story/campaign) gaming, which turned off a lot of people. And micro-transactions. Oh and the kowtowing to women also killed it.

I haven't bought or played any games seriously since GTA IV in 2008. I was pretty big into gaming until around 2005, then pretty much lost interest with the exceptions of the Guitar Hero/Rock Band games for awhile (due to multiplayer aspect of it and it being such a big deal for a couple years back in the day) and GTA IV.
I have completely lost interest in video gaming. Though I think that may have less to do with decreasing quality in games and more to do with just outgrowing it as a hobby.

cos chit companies like EA and Activision taught other companies that they don't need to program functional games to make money
Just look at umm, what's that crap company that made Watch Dogs, fuking Ubisoft, just look at Ubisoft and the chit games they been releasing yet making stupid amounts of money. Why? Because they put more effort into promoting and advertising the game than the actual fuking code for the game.
Gaming is crap these days I can't name one game I enjoyed in the last few years.

I could actually see there being a lot of truth in this. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the multiplayer aspect of gaming often times, but I was always more interested in the campaign/single player aspects of it.
Once in a great while, I'll hook up the old N64, SNES, NES, or Sega Genesis and play some of the classics from those eras. Every few years, I get a wild hair to play some GTA IV too - I think that was easily one of the best single player games of all time. But other than that, I just haven't been interested enough in the new games to go drop the money on new consoles/games.

One of the biggest problems is that the mid-tier no longer exists. It only makes financial sense to put the work into developing a game if it's AAA (high expectancy of sales) or an indie (low costs).
Video game prices have remained at like $49.99 (more or less) since 1985. FUKKING 1985. Meanwhile, virtually all costs have gone up (the move from disk/cartridge to digital distribution wasn't that much of a money saver). Hell even just inflation has raised the costs of making a game.
So year after year, the profitability of selling each copy of a game gets smaller and smaller, and gamers are not willing to pay more than about $49 bucks. According to the CPI Inflation Calculator, a $49.99 game in 1985 would cost $109 in 2015.
This also cuts down on developers taking risks. That's why the big publishers are always pushing blah-blah2k15 and another iteration of COD and BF. It's consistent revenue. No need to roll the dice when there's easy money to be made.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

video gaming is far from dead its actually booming right now its just because you are getting older and less in tune with the industry which is very reasonable. But in the not so distant future we have VR. Right now we have the souls series and bloodborne, legit as **** games, Bloodborne on ps4 which shows even consoles have legit games that a pc gamer would be jealous of. Right now tho its all about dat CS GO.

It's worse for PC games. Piracy + only moving units during Steam Sales at slashed prices.
Again, the single key ingredient to a renaissance in video gaming would be for the general public to accept higher retail prices for video games. That ain't gonna happen though. Hell, games will prolly still cost $49.99 twenty years from now.
Not trying to be a negative nancy - just answering OP's question. In truth, the alternative approach could be more crowd-funding of high-level indie games. The success of Pillars of Eternity is evident that it could work.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
