This just blows my mind that something like this could exist and in a city as populated as New York. Essentially they're banking on people being too preoccupied to pursue legal action. Having to send a certified letter to cancel a GYM MEMBERSHIP? What the fuk is this, 1900??? Holy chit that looks like a massive red flag. The yelp reviews clearly show they are willing to do anything (including destroying documents) to continue charging people. Oh, you jumped through our first three hoops? Well, you didn't send your letter via registered mail so I'm just going to throw it out.
I feel for OP... They are essentially using similar (yet even more despicable) tactics as people who sell time shares to get people to buy training.
Edit: Any lawyer bras know for sure... If I cancel my CC and stop using a service can they just send it to collections even if I never used the service? I suppose it depends on the initial contract signed...?Winter came for Littlefinger

Didn't read the whole thread but I work at a country club in California, and I'm fairly certain it's the law in every state where if you enroll in any type of membership based service you have a 3-day refund period or 3-day period to 'back out'. I believe in California it is required to be 20 days. Not sure about NY. Say you won't be paying a dime and make sure you log it all through email.
I would personally go in, have your phone recording in a jacket pocket, and request to speak to the General Manager. Mention that the trainer said you had a three day back out period. Say you will lawyer up if you are sent to collections. What a terrible company. He who hesitates is lost

Lol I'd be going in there saying that they can cancel it or I am reaching out to every news agency in the metro, and the next communication they get will be from a lawyer. Thats shady as fuk.

Adding on to what everyone is saying, never sign chit without reading it. If you're not sure, don't sign. You dun goofed by signing even though you said you wanted to think about it. Once it's signed, the deal is done.
I know how these guys work. There's a sales person at my gym and everyone knows him as a snake, even the other sales persons and personal trainers call him that behind his back. I've seen how he, especially, works. Fuking disgusting preying on these people.

I think I'll have a better chance to threaten them with legal action and if that doesn't work I can always say I was sexually harassed although I don't wanna be a liar like they are. I'm not paying chit. I don't wanna change my CC number but I've already blocked their company from ever charging me again. If they send me to collections I'll be screwed.

FIle a complaint assuming this is the synergy you go to. If not, do a simple google search for the one in your area. File a complaint and see how fast they come crawling to work things out.“Israel in the Middle East is fighting on behalf of the free world,” declared Mosab Hassan Yousef, the outspoken son of Hamas leader Hassan Yousef.

That's the thing they don't come crawling. They don't care. I don't understand how they're not shut down already. All their locations have 2 stars on Yelp and a bunch of reviews of ppl who were also screwed by them. I'm sure there are more who didn't bother writing about it. BBB has several complaints against them, and most of them are there without a reply. Also their "social media" manager is a kunt and his reply is always the same. They don't take responsibility for anything!

I think the only reason they aren't shut down is because they technically arent doing anything illegal billing wise. Yes they are scummy as fuk, and they lie, manipulate and cheat people -- but all of this is done in person without "proof". Biling people after they cancel a credit card or block their payments isn't exactly illegal, but I think (maybe someone with better info can help me out here) most businesses would simply deny you entry to the location, not build up charges against you and then send a collections agency after you...
