People are taught about hell as children when they don't know better. They adopt a belief system that says hell is a very real and scary place. Even as they get older and intellectually should be able to understand how silly their beliefs are they can't. According to their belief system even challenging these beliefs literally threatens their existence. Its the ego protecting itself.
Its the same reason why you can tie up an elephant as a child. Even as it grows up and becomes strong enough to break loose it doesn't even bother to try. The elephants belief system is that it is impossible and trying only amounts to pain and suffering.
Our belief systems really do shape our world like a self fulfilling prophecy. They are like operating systems that subconsciously control our behavior and thoughts. IMO its a very good idea to be aware of whats going on. Instead of denying it and thinking you are some special butterfly that isn't effected by these kinds of things. That way you can consciously brainwash yourself instead of just being a victim of circumstance. Like growing up in a religious family and believing in hell.…we have not spent the last 65 million or so years finely honing our physiology to watch Oprah. Like it or not, we are the product of a very long process of adaptation to a harsh physical existence, and the past couple centuries of comparative ease and plenty are not enough time to change our genome. We humans are at our best when our existence mirrors, or at least simulates, the one we are still genetically adapted to live. And that is the purpose of exercise. - Mark Rippetoe

Really? Do you honestly feel that the "majority" of people around you every day would snatch your wallet from you, or physically harm you if there was no law? Would you do those things if it wasn't for your faith or local law enforcement LOL?!? It is sad to think so poorly of the people we live with...I hope you just didn't think that statement through before you typed it out.

lol No. That"s just silly. Most people don't do those kinds of things because of empathy.

How/why do you think those laws where created in the first place? lol…we have not spent the last 65 million or so years finely honing our physiology to watch Oprah. Unfortunately that is the same reasoning that leads to all the muslim hate here (myself included)...through the wretched behaviour of the muslims who do wretched things. That has turned into negativity towards all muslims...don't make the same mistake with all people due to the wretched ones.
Wrong is wrong

What does being Muslim or not have to do with this? O_o
That fear is necessary for society to stay on the right path. Doesn't matter what they're fearing.
Dunno about mirror neurons, but yes. Most people lack empathy towards strangers. Especially in today's world.
Don't worry about what I experience. That's beside the point and I'm a bit of a lost cause.Thus let me live, unseen, unknown;
Thus unlamented let me die;
Steal from the world, and not a stone
Tell where I lie.

You can always count on the Abrahamic religions to instill a sense of love for and pride in the human race among its followers, what with their dogma about how we're all ultimately sinful, unworthy creatures who are an affront to God and, without intervention, are destined for eternal punishment just by virtue of being people alone.

Oh didn't you hear the news? Hell is a tangible place that exists very close to us according to this aerospace engineer (who is conveniently writing a book about it):

It's complicated. Essentially you're living this life to avoid an eternal torture pit. You are obeying out of fear . Hell is an impossible concept that no one could rationally ever commit themselves to . No one , no matter which alternative , would EVER choose Hell. Therefore, the arbitrariness of the decision because there is no decision. You follow God because the other choice is impossible. Hence meaningless existence .
