you know I was thinking lately, "allahu abkar!" seems kinda catchy in a way, just rolls of the tongue nice and smoothly.
I wish Christians had some kind of equivalent to say/yell to troll athiests and whatnot.
If you have a great success you can yell "Thank you Jesus!" or if something bad happens "oh my God!" but it's not quite as nice and not just 1 phrase...

Great question, brother. I pray on my train ride to work for about 5 minutes. I bust out the sign of the cross on the public train. I ask God to give me the power to sacrifice myself to help others and be a pawn that He moves to achieve His will. I also ask daily to see the world with the eyes of Christ, to see those in need whoever they might be and to be strong enough to stand up for what's right in any given situation.
I pray before lunch and dinner (standard Catholic prayer..."Bless us oh Lord...."
Then I pray at night, which is when I really converse with God. I pray those who I see on the news, the kids of all faiths and no-faith suffering in Syria, Iraq, etc., and especially the Christians who have no help, that they will find peace in martyrdom and have the strength to endure if that is their fate. I pray for the molested, raped, depressed, addicted, hungry, poor, neglected, and lost; for each of my family members by name, and then the souls of my friends/family who I have lost that they may be saved as pass through Purgatory.
Every few weeks I confess venial sins and say an act of contrition. I used to pray the rosary daily ad other times weekly, but lately that has taken a backseat. I plan on resuming weekly rosary prayer this summer.
I'd love to hear how you or other brothers/sisters ITT pray, too. Always good to learn new ways to commune with God.Last edited by ONtop888; 03-30-2015 at 06:05 PM.

Great answer, Ontop (for the prayer, I mean...). I really like the Troparia to the Holy Trinity & the Prayer of St. Basil in the morning to help direct my thoughts before I add anything. (I replace the Theotokos with Christ, of course.) At night, it always helps to do it in the early evening & I like to put on gregorian chants or palestrina & such to help me focus. Otherwise, my mind will sidetrack.
I read a prayer for the muslim world recently in a book & it was so powerful I copied it down for myself. I'd quote it here, but it's not really the place.
I was using a confession app to be more mindful of shortcomings. I'm a very forgetful person. My sister thinks it needs to be tweaked to include stats on your problem areas & track improvements, lol. That's how I know we're related.Last edited by confuoco; 03-30-2015 at 06:43 PM.

Thank you, confu. I'll look up the Troparia to the Holy Trinity & the Prayer of St. Basil. Prayers for the Muslim world are essential. I should pray for that more often, too.
I read from an Orthodox site that the Copts who were martyred numbered only 20....the last one was Chadian (he's the black man in the video) and was apparently a Muslim. In the video he turns to the guy to his side and says something as the ISIS demon is behind him. Apparently the ISIS man asked him to renounce his faith and the Chadian Muslim said, "their faith is mine." Pretty powerful stuff.Virile agitur

If she is talking about the prayer I think she is, it's a prayer to the Holy Trinity that originates in eastern orthodoxy (at least I think it does).
Having arisen from sleep, we fall down before Thee, O Blessed One, and sing to Thee, O Mighty One, the Angelic Hymn: Holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God. Through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
From my bed and sleep Thou hast raised me; O Lord, enlighten my mind and my heart, and open my lips that I may praise Thee, O Holy Trinity: Holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God. Through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Both now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen.
Suddenly the Judge shall come, and the deeds of each shall be revealed, but with fear we cry out in the middle of the night: Holy, holy, holy art Thou, O God. Through the Theotokos have mercy on us.
Lord, have mercy. (12x)
Replacing Theotokos with Christ of course, on her end.'On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness. Thanks ONtop88,
I'll be honest I don't do that much praying these days.
When I was a kid I would pray every night before going to bed. Just a quick our father, hail mary, then pray for all my family members and thats pretty much it.
It was a very kind of automated prayer without putting much thought into it.
I'm trying to get back into praying but hopefully in a more meaningful /meditational way.

You should check out what's been written about Catholic Examination of Conscience before prayer (end of the day prayer).

Hopefully examination of conscience isn't a partisan issue. Should be the essence of every professing Christian.

1) Open with dear Heavenly Father...
2) I try to spend most of my time expressing gratitude for my blessings and for the good things in my life and around me.
3) Ask for things I need, express my concerns and discuss my goals and the things I want to improve on. Pray for specific people. Sometimes express regret for things I've done, said or thought and recommit to be better.
4) Discuss the things that are on my mind and share thoughts I have about life and ask questions about things I'm seeking answers too.
5) Sometime express gratitude for a few more things and close in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
I usually replace the words you and your with thee, thou, thy, and thine when addressing or referencing God in pray as a matter of respect and reverence.

Someone needs to write a monograph on the impact of economics on heresy/theological innovation. There's at least three major areas I can think of in Christian doctrine that were affected by economics:
1) Relics/indulgences. The truth is, there's nothing wrong with relics, they're a largely harmless -if ineffectual- aid to spirituality. Confuoco's argument that they stymie spiritual growth by offering the believer an easy out presumes that the believer living in a low-trust society would do the hard work to grow in lieu of any relic, something that can't be proven. The early Christians used them, people all over the world have used them or some variant. The problem only really begins when early capitalism rears its head in 15th century Europe, leading to greater efficiencies that distort the relic market and prompt theological justifications for its abuse. Relic manufacture goes from a series of competing cottage industries to industrial production levels within a generation or two, making the market unrecognizable. The difference between the market for relics in 15th century, early capitalist Europe and the market for them in 15th century, non-capitalist India is telling.
2) High-trust business networks' impact on the protestant rejection of intercessors and relics. Protestants reject confession to priests, opting instead for relationships of mutual spiritual accountability with their peers.
3) Low-trust networks' impact on Cathodox theology, i.e. the cloud of witnesses/Church Triumphant as idealized patronage system mirroring a pre-modern, amoral familist kinship model. The difference being that the main resource in the afterlife, God's grace, is infinite, unlike the resources for which AF families competed in pre-modern Europe. The cloud of witnesses is an infinite clan in which families no longer have to compete amorally with one another for resources.
Not to mention how Christianity's and Islam's salvation histories and views of the afterlife reflect a yearning to transcend amoral familism and what it reduces people to.
edit: would also be interesting to see what role amoral familism plays in the background of monasticism, an institution defined by people leaving their families behind to go live with a group of people to whom they're not related; time honored in Catholic and Orthodox countries but derided or seen as needless in Protestant ones.
Or Gregory VII's reforms that required a celibate priesthood as a reaction to the European nobility's infiltrating the RCC's upper hierarchy in order to use it to enrich their own families at everyone else's expense.Last edited by Bullroarer; 03-30-2015 at 08:51 PM.

Something I heard in class today....we are going over the part of history in which christianity began to appear.
Anyway, the nicene creed? Any of you aware? Part of it has to do with deciding whether Jesus is man or God because he can't be both, do I have that right?Official misc attaché to the Kremlin

Somewhat. The question was (at Nicea) does Christ have a fully divine nature or a semi divine nature.
The Arians said semi-divine, the rest said fully divine, one in nature with the father. The controversy literally was ripping apart the roman empire, believe it or not. It was the next council (Chalcedon) that addressed how He could be fully divine AND fully human (since Nicea declared Him fully divine). And that also was causing mass chaos in the roman empire.'On many levels, mathematics itself operates as Whiteness. For me, every prayer I pray is different , except for prayer before eating, which is mostly just saying thank you for the food I am about to receive.
but an example of my regular prayers, i will pray one right now
"Father, thank you for everything you have done for me, I know I did not and still do not deserve any of it. I love you, but that is because you have taught me how to love correctly. I renounce my desires, my will, and my thoughts. I rebuke myself, and my sin. Let your will rule over my life. Let my feet walk in the path that you have set before me. Sometimes my heart may falter and momentarily desire a sinful thing, but I rebuke myself. I only wish to obey you, and that is easy, as you are the Creator of all things, and your wisdom is so great I cannot even comprehend it, so trusting in you is common sense, but a common sense that I was blind to. Thank you for saving me again and for being patient with me, and for continuing to be patient with me, Father. I only ask for your will to be done in my life, and I love you. Amen"Last edited by CalmWind; 03-30-2015 at 10:36 PM.
