Sugar itself cannot make you fat. Consuming too many calories is what makes you fat. I have yet to see one study that proves an increase of sugar intake when eating at maintenance calories will cause weight gain.
While there are many studies showing an increase in sugar intake will lead to weight gain, these results are due to the increase in calories, not the sugar itself. These studies do not control for calories. An ideal study would have two groups eat at maintenance calories, with one consuming more sugar than the other. Can anybody show me a study like this?
It is impossible to gain weight when you eat as many calories as you burn. It violates the first law of thermodynamics. There are a mountain of studies proving this:

would still say Americans (especially) are fat due to eating foods that are highly processed and get addicted to high sugar products (cereals, desserts, snack food) that contribute to their overweight issues and obesity
your sugar should be coming from fruits, dairy, etc. in terms of healthy diet options and controlling weight and getting quality nutrientsFounder of MMDELAD

If you came out with this about 8 years ago with scientific research to back, the majority of people on here would have been amazed. Now, not so much. Try something else next time....and please don't come out with the meal frequency thing, we know that to.
In fact, there are alot of knowledgeable people on this thread. I know you were trying to help, but this type of post could come across as insulting to some. I do assume this is why you are in the red.

There probably aren't a lot of studies because it DOES NOT PHUCKING MATTER! Only the most anal people in the world count calories (and all of them post on this site). All that matters to the rest of humanity is what causes you to gain weight and what doesn't when you use your body's natural hunger/weight adjusting systems.
One thing a lot of studies do take into account that ALSO DOES NOT PHUCKING MATTER is caloric density. It doesn't matter. People only think it does because most of the things that are caloricly dense are also bad for you and cause you to over-eat. As an example, if you are adjusted to a high fat diet (no longer craving carbs), you can get full off a few spoonfuls of ghee or coconut oil because density does not matter. Also, if you fill yourself to the brim with plain lettuce, you will feel stuffed but still want to eat more of something else. You're body is smart enough to figure out how many calories are there and how many it needs.
