    Equipment for PT Business

    Hello,

Recently I received my ISSA cert. Now, I want to start training clients for the spring. Since spring is such a busy time for PT, I want to get started ASAP. Currently, I have a bench and dip bar. I want to add a couple machines, a treadmill, and a decent dumbbell set. However, at 19, I'm not exactly king in terms of cash. Where would be the best place to find these things? I have checked CL but it seems people still charge a good chunk of money.

    Thanks!

Can't you work out of a commercial gym to get some experience?

    No brain, no gain.

Okay. I've thought about this and have applied to a few places but I've heard going independent is almost always the best choice. I might move to CA and would love to work for Equinox. Are there any gyms that you would recommend? Thanks.

Going independent is the best choice, for an experienced qualified trainer with a solid client list.

Once you have 5-10 years of working experience, and craigslist prices stop looking expensive, then you might be able to make the jump.

Not to mention that you can work out of some public gyms without being and employee of the gym. Learning about the business world and how to run one will help too.

I could name 20 gyms but they might be 10k miles away. Where are you from?

WA. The closest gyms are Anytime, YMCA, and a few CrossFit places.

Definitely start at a gym. If you have that cert you will probably have no problem getting a job. I was so lost with my first few clients, if I was independent it would've been a problem.

As everyone has already said, you need to cut your teeth at a gym. I'm sure you have plenty of knowledge and good intention, but you will learn so much in your first two or three years. If after that you still want to go for it, then (many move on to different things- myself included) its time to go solo while you are still keen and young.
