try asking if you can shift your hours to coming in earlier and leaving earlier. I get to work early and leave around 3:30, feels so much different than when I was working 8-5p

agreed OP.
I remember those first few weeks after college graduation when you're in your first office job. Each day feels so long and miserable. But slowly you get used to it. 1week or 2week vacations are never enough to completely decompress, you're always in that grind until you're 60+ if you follow the ratrace lifestyle. It's absurd to not take breaks, travel, try starting your own consulting business, whatever.
I've found that the end of 2 weeks off is when you just START to find your groove and be comfortable not working 9-5 (if you've been doing it for a few years). And that's exactly when even the longest vacations usually end! So you're right back in it.
I think if you quit your 9-5 you'd actualy be depressed 1-2 weeks, feeling empty. Did you make a mistake? etc But after that 2 week period you'd get into your groove and realize life is amazing and there's so much time in each and every day! We wake up super early, go sit under flourescent lights, the sun crosses the sky and sets, and then we leave barely in time for dinner.
Crazy if you ask me.

8 hours of work is not bad. Mark cuban noted in his book he would work 16+hr days plus time on the weekend on his computer business. I think its important though to do work your naturally more inclined to. Not necessarily enjoy, but something you know that the more work you put in the more it benefits you. Lot of these office gigs are about managing paper work and customer service, versus engineering where you are actually doing tangible work.

Say you sleep 8 hours/day, work 8/hours a day, and that leaves you at least 5-6 hours to do whatever you want (the other 2-3 hours may be spent showering, driving, or other stupid stuff so not gonna count that).
I don't see what the big deal is.
Plus you have Saturday and Sunday off ALL day.
I know people who work 60+ hours a week. Just be happy you don't have to live through that.

News flash. I, nor any one else gives a flying **** what it is you do to "earn a living" and earn fake notes of paper which run your life. It's who you are that matters, not what job you do to earn fake money. Your goals should be focused on personal growth and helping other people out in need, not materialism. Just because your bank account is growing, it doesn't mean you are. Congratulations on being completely ENSLAVED to digits on your bank account and pieces of paper in your pocket.

40hrs isn't bad. My uncle is a dairy farmer
-Gets up at 3:00am for milking
-45min break at 9:00 for breakfast
-45min break at 11 for lunch
-Done for the day at 6:30pm (longer days when haying)
* Milking is indoors but rest of the time he's outside shoveling spoiled hay or other jobs. Feel bad for him when its 20mph winds and -10F
Works 7 days a week, takes 2 days off per month (another farmer takes over for him). Does take Sat/Sunday off from regular duties and just does milkings, so only 8 hour work days on sat/sun.
None of you should be complaining- root console
