And order of operations is arbitrary. It's just a way of standardizing the way expressions are written so kids can do problems in school. In real life, the situation you're trying to calculate for will dictate the order in which you process parts of a function.

Because you typically simply everything above the numerator, and below the numerator. This is just a horribly written problem that should have parenthesis to make it clear the order of operations.

I don't see any other way to do it, unless the (5 (2x2)) would be in the denominator, in which case it should be written in parenthesis when in a single line equation.

the problem is malformed due to idiotic typing on a computer. Because when you use paper and pencil it's not an issue. The correct way to write it out would be
