We have one that we have spotted 2 times at our place. I saw it at the end of last month and it was the first time I have ever seen one IRL. It was in a tree on the edge of our lot. Was pretty cool. Was amazing to see just how big it actually is.
We are use to seeing hawks and buzzards. LOL!**DIRTYSOUTHCREW**

Thats pretty cool. I have had a horned owl fly into a tree I was in while bow hunting. Just swooped right in, If I wouldnt have been strapped to the tree I might have jumped out, was like 3' tall and just mean looking . It was as startled as I was when it realised I wasnt part of the tree.
Also had a close encounter with an eagle while fishing on a river and got too close to its giant nest. They get a little aggresive. I didnt even notice it until I heard teh wings flapping and it swooped past me and went back and landed on its perch and just glared at me until I left....
I like watching them from the safety of my computer though

Yeah, I did the exact same thing. I had to make it full screen and watch her diaphragm move. I think she was asleep.
I had to do some quick research about their resistance to cold. It made me feel a bit better, but the temperature is supposed to drop from 33 right now to single digits by the late afternoon.

I'm just going to assume they are equipped to handle whatever nature throws at them. I found this very interesting:
Bald eagles have 7,000 feathers. Eagle feathers are lightweight yet extremely strong, hollow yet highly flexible. They protect the bird from the cold as well as the heat of the sun, by trapping layers of air. To maintain its body temperature an eagle simply changes the position of its feathers. While an eagle suns itself on a cold morning, it ruffles and rotates its feathers so that the air pockets are either opened to the air or drawn together to reduce the insulating effect. Feathers also provide waterproofing and protection, and are crucial for flight. Feather structure makes pliability possible. Overlapping feathers can form a dense covering, which the birds can open or close at will. The bald eagle has several layers of feathers, each serving a different function. Under the outer layer of feathers is an inner layer of down or smaller feathers.
The inter locking of feathers is an astonishing design of nature. The feathers enable eagles to live in extremely cold environments. Eagles do not have to migrate to warmer areas each year to fulfill temperature requirements, they migrate to available food supplies. A lone eagle feather is believed to convey great power. North American Indians incorporated the eagle's primaries and tail feathers into their ceremonies and legends.

Pretty amazing, yesterday the eagles took turns sitting on the eggs. My wife told me she saw them switch positions. Here is a link of a time lapse.
http://wtop.com/watercooler/2015/03/...storm/slide/1/
Earlier: 3:30 p.m., Thursday March 5: The mate of the snow covered eagle has returned to the nest. Check out the photos to see the transition as the second eagle took over egg-sitting duties.
While a smudge on the camera blocks some of the view, the seamless switch was pretty amazing to watch. The two “love birds” made the transition in such away that their eggs weren’t exposed for even a moment. Check out the gallery to see a visual timeline.Last edited by EarlA; 03-06-2015 at 07:07 AM.

Lol, me and my son were on different computers with the eagles on a tab (snow day here, couldn't even make it to the gym). Watched as the one sloooowly got more and more buried by now. Only knew was alive as once in a while the beak moved. Eventually son was like "her tail is all the way covered and just her head it out!" That's when I looked at my computer and the feed had frozen at the 2nd eagle about to land on the nest. I was like "oooh, they are switching!!" and by the time we rushed to refresh, there was just one snow-less eagle sitting down again, lol

We have one over in Ft. Myers, FL. Eagles have returned to the same spot every year since, if I recall, 2011/2012. Seems Ozzie, the male, has recently been injured and it was initially questionable whether he will ever fly again (don't know if his prognosis has changed). Harriet, the female, remains on the nest.

I saw an owl last week, when I went for a run as it was getting dark. I could have sworn it turned its head around, 360 degrees. I stopped to take a good look at him (he was perched on a 'no parking' sign), he started staring at me (or it seemed that way lol), and it was a little scary there for a moment as I passed him by.
