Honestly, I am not really big in to the anime culture and I understand how people get turned off by them. But here is the thing, if you liked watch dbz growing up, you will LOVE Death Note as a grown up!
Its not like the typical perverted anime with goofy sense of humor and a cheap attempt of perversion in order to appeal to the FA. This animes greatness comes from a solid storyline and strong characters that are placed in moral dilemma.
Death note is the Fight Club of the animes and you will love it, specially the first half of the show!!!

Deathnote was incredible. Just gotta tell people to be careful that it doesn't become a gateway drug into that kawaii highschool catgirl mixed gender magic maids shiet.

Amen! I am glad to see so many Death Note supporters! I am also fan of many animes but I kind of feel uncomfortable talking about it. However, Death Note is the type of anime I can talk about without feeling like a weirdo and every single person who has watched it has loved it and these are people from various ages and culture!
Death Note is the best, best anime in the world, all the animes are animated by little girls!

Don't know why the stigma attached to anime is that it's childish and lame. There are several different genres of anime, and not all of them fall into the stereotypical category that the majority thinks of.
Death Note is a great anime (although it does fall off after a certain point IMO...people who have watched will know exactly what I'm talking about), but there are several other animes with great plots, character development, and artwork. Some brahs have already mentioned some, but i'll list some of mine:
Rurouni Kenshin (hands down favourite anime of all time)
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (highly suggest this over the original FMA series)
Blood+ (fantastic if you're into swords, demons and whatnot)
Hellsing
Inuyasha (loveable characters and a serious plot that is beautifully contrasted with comedic relief)
