Because God knows that a tongue-in-cheek, humorous, post by a native of the Philippines about the simplicity of the Japanese flag definitely requires everyone knowing how not racist you are.

Super, super, super important to make sure that everyone understands that.
I guess I just don't see anything wrong with what RT said.

The humorous part of the discussion ended with Arch Angels and Karls post... not RTs. We know you guys don't like each other... seen the pissing matches. At least RT came into the thread to add to the discussion, what was your purpose?

But no... would not be outraged. Might bind up my jim jams a bit and what not.

I'm not say it is racist, only that the banner itself is controversial.

It's nothing more than a reminder of the southern heritage.

And that was the flag of the people who were against freeing the slaves, no? How can we now later on say that it represents southern way of life or whatever it represents, when it was created because they didn't want their slavery laws being messed with?

    Cass

the Southern Cross (the star constellation) is also featured on our (Australian) flag
It is a part of our pride and heritage, nowdays it's quite common for younger people
    to have the symbol tattooed

and now I have learnt it is the name for the Confederate Flag

The Civil war was not started over slavery directly, it was started to squash the rebellion. However, the rebellion was started because they felt the Federal Government had no right getting involved in State Affairs, specifically regarding racism. The Southern Cross was the banner in which blacks were told the Constitution did not apply to them.

After the Southern loss, the confederate flag all but faded from memory. It wasn't until the Civil rights movement that the Southern Cross resurfaced on the side that supported Jim Crow law.

The civil war was about state's rights. You have to understand that you have a lot of people in the south who's ancestors perished by either fighting or massacre under that flag.

Yes, I understand that. The war and the aftermath was horrible for the South.

We never encountered a problem until we started doing interstate commerce.
We received a lot of cocomplaints from companies in the Midwestern states.

Totally false. The Jim Crow law was abolished in the mid 1960's.
There were plenty confederate flags flying way before then, not to mention the fact that there were/are public schools with the rebel mascot and the confederate flag decal.

Without attaching any meaning to the Japanese flag, it is indeed perfect because of it's simplicity and is very "user friendly."

It was the Civil Rights movement that began in 1954 that ended Jim Crow Laws in 1964

The flag was in regular use through it's 130 year span and was largely just a White State Symbol. Just prior to the CRM, the Dixie Flag was the banner flown over those who sought to suppress the constitutional rights of others, and later on the banner used by hate groups.

The Stars and Bars may have been displayed by the state during the reconstruction (between Civil War and Civil Rights Movement).

... was flown at schools blacks were not allowed to attend.
... was flown at courtrooms that did not fairly represent them.

The sources don't matter. It's a purely opinion-based notion what the flag stands for. I don't see anything racist in the flag while I do see many racists who revere it. They who love it for the wrong reasons are just as ignorant as northerners who hate it for the wrong reasons.
