Dogs provide an unconditional affection. No matter how insufferable of a **** you are, if you feed a dog and don't abuse it, it will be friendly to you. Because dogs are mostly friendly and don't have the capacity/motivation to hate, they generally are perceived as innocent and morally superior to humans, who can be mean and point out flaws.

It's almost always ugly old spinsters that are the animal fanatics.

The reasons are obvious, they have no value to society at large anymore. They don't have the traditional matron role that older women are supposed to have because they don't have kids/grandkids. Animals love unconditionally and are the basically the only things that care about them so they get all insane about animal rights and chit.

Don't pity them that much though. These women were probably mega sloots in their prime and the reason they aren't married with kids because they never settled.
