    I would consider it a "pulling motion" because you are moving the weight closer to you. Squats would be a "pushing motion" because you are moving the weight in a direction away from you.

    I get what you're saying. "Proper" form = pushing from your heels so it's a push exercise.

    But, let's think about physics for a second. You're hanging onto the bar with your hands, which means you're countering gravity. That means that you must be pulling the bar. However, it doesn't mean that the energy derived from displacing your arms upward came from the muscles in your upper body. Instead, they could come from your lower body, hence it is a push exercise. However, technically you are pulling with your arms even if the energy didn't come from your upper body's muscles.

    No, the push pull was designed with the deadlift being a pull exercise. But, when you're deadlifting don't think of it as a pulling motion. Try to push those heels through the fuking ground.
