Alright geezers, life question. Few things are known. I'm 30, 31 in a few months. Single, and will be for the forseeable future with the exception of a cat. Graduating next year, signing with a recognized company, good benefits, very good salary. From a financial perspective, would it be better to rent a house for the next few years or buy? Although it's just me, I'm relatively spartan lifestyle wise minus the occasional good suit, shirts, shoes, coats. Dress well, but within my means.
Here's the catch: I've planned on buying an NSX for roughly a decade now. Financially, I will be able to do that whether I rent or buy as I'm budgeting for $40k or less on the car. Opinions? I don't really feel the need to own a house, although it seems to be something that is routinely done. Essentially, rent/mortgage and associated bills would be the only bills I have as I have no other debt. Currently, I have none, zero debt. So taking on a car payment would put me in debt for what, about five years? Tolerable. Nonetheless, I'd like to hear some opinions.United States Marine Corps [Sep. '01 - Mar. '13]

Buying a house is probably better if you're sticking around one place for a while. But if you save up and put more down later you can get a nicer place.
I've had the same house for like 8 years, only just now getting above water on it. Most other people I know have had much success in home ownership. I still don't regret it though.☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ ★cVc★ ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

This. Im still under on mine, but i rent it out. I dont make up the mortgage but in the end i got closer to work, and someone is paying 75% of my mortgage for me right now (for the time being). Eventually, i will have a house that's paid for, that i didnt pay a majority on, and is doing nothing but generating cash.

Buying actually looks financially better, judging by the mortgage prices. I'm just trying to look at it from a financial standpoint which will merit me better.

financially, saving for a down payment on an appreciating asset is better than spending it on a depreciating asset
You will simply be in a better financial position 5-10 yrs from now with the house
But, I've been in a situation like yours
If I had not bought the cars I wanted, I would have had $80k more in my bank account right now, probably more as that calculation was a couple of years old(I took the cost of the cars and grew them at the rate of my actual investments)
I do somewhat regret buying the car, but, I can understand the desire to get it, especially when all the hard work you put in finally put you in a position to buy what you have always wantedDallas Cowboys

I almost wonder if it would smart to rent for a few years then. That would (if I went that route) net the car (being paid off before buying the house), along with saving for a good down payment by putting aside a certain amount after all bills are paid. Since the car payment + rent would essentially be the (roughly) same as the mortgage (assuming housing fees, etc), there's only one of two ways I can see this. Forego the car and put more towards saving for a house in a few years or buy the car (small loan), make payments and put savings towards a house. Either way, I plan on living between the 36% and 50% marks, for total bills (utilities, car payment, rent/mortgage, insurance, etc). Maybe touch a little over 50% on occasion, but not over. The rest is planned for second 401k (already have one IRA from years in the military), savings and investments (which I currently have and will continue).
Although I imagine I could go a bit higher on the car, that is my absolute budget set aside for it. At this point, I'd only be looking at cars that have either stopped depreciating or started appreciating. The NSX is one of them, and outside of the major service; relatively trouble free. Ah, I'd be utilizing a VA loan so although I wouldn't need to make a down payment; I would.United States Marine Corps [Sep. '01 - Mar. '13]

You need to consider the ability to get a loan on a car that old and that expensive (honestly have no idea what they're going for now). And, if they will loan the $ at what interest rate?
Rent or buy is up to you, but stack it high and deep. You don't have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.

I find for me, I gain weight primarily when I'm in a relationship and it is difficult to get that weight off during those times. Whereas when I'm single...super easy cause I eat what I want, when I want.
Thus can't have a relationship...will ruin my gains. LOLWorkout Log / Chat thread...Embrace the Dragon: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=169711903

Awesome buddy. I know that feeling growing up, seeing successful people and just assuming stuff like that is not for you. You just can't see the path from down there.
My way out was oilfield and mining not the army, but its still 4-5 years of dues paid before you get a shot at something better.------♥♥-----
