Okay, the title pretty much says it. I've got $1000, what should I buy?
Now, I know you'll need some background.
I'm not 'fit'. I'm overweight (5' 11", 243 lbs.) but not completely out of shape (I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 2 to 4 times a week). One goal I've had is to start losing weight, so I've started changing my diet. However I would also like to be able to get the strength/muscle back I had when I was younger and maybe even eclipse my prior self. I'm planning on using Stronglifts 5x5 or 5/3/1 as I've heard many beginning a strength program have benefited from these.
My plan for gaining strength is to buy a Squat Rack, Bench, Olympic Weight Set, and a Rowing Machine for my garage turned home gym. The rowing machine will come later next year. For now I want to focus on the Rack, Weights, and Bench. I'm wanting to keep my budget in the $1000 to $1200 range. I tried parsing through the power rack thread but that thing is a behemoth.
Given that information is there any equipment out there in my price range you could suggest for long term use?
Thanks,
troxy88
PS: I have hit up craigslist (been doing so for the last 6-8 months) and nothing I'd be interested in buying has popped up. It's all been shady looking equipment or a shady seller. Also, I don't know what I'm buying and it'd be nice to hear some product suggestions for NEW equipment.

These might be good resources for you
h ttp://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=113942001
h ttp://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/Equipment
h ttp://stronglifts.com/5x5/ The stronglifts website has a section on equipment as well
I would also check out some of the black friday deals which are being tracked in another thread.
For that budget, some of the body solid gear from FitnessFactory maybe something to consider. They have good prices (cheaper if you call) on some package deal with their power rack and weights. I suspect you could get a bench, rack and weights for just above half your budget.

1000$ won't get you very far buying new.
go used. your not using Cl well enough. just tell us where you live. someone will find **** for you.
use a vairety of terms and common typos on those terms. you'll be surprised.
"home gym, gym, power rack, ivanko, york, barbell, plate, plates, crossfit, bumper plates, olympic, olympic barbell, olympic set, body power, powertec, hammer strength, lifting, working out, bodypower, bar bell, dumb bell, dumbbell, etc"
this is what i got for about $1000 (300lb ivanko iron, 3 barbells (2 generic, 1 rogue castro (love that bitch)), 280lb rogue hi temp bumpers, 200lb standard plates (mostly york), random ****.... and i have a bestbelt coming in the mail today )))))). im postponing my lowerbody workout from yesterday to today, until it arrives. can't ****ing wait. need more 45s though, but beyond that every thing else seems like extras.
a rack, barbell and iron is all you really need to achieve almost anything.
edit: i should add that pic is almost a year old. but not much has changed since i first put it together. i mean i don't have the room for more beyond plates, but i don't have any desire to add more beyond plates anyways... (a new bench would be nice though...)[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #42 []---[]

http://fayar.craigslist.org/spo/4736222646.html
here's a start. that rack is similar to my gpr 378. same people think the load is like 800 or something. so very high its the cheapest rack that is still decent enough to get the job done.
wieder plates suck, but weight is weight. 4hr rd trip. ask for recent photos of everything. but that's a good start. i would get another barbell maybe go out of your way and get a decent one (new) or go generic and wait for a bargain like i did. my castro was $20.
plates are easy to come by.
or keep waiting and slowly build it up. i think my rack was the last thing i got, i just kept my membership and slowly built up my gym on the side. now it's all i use. which is great cause the amount og snow we got today, i'd probably not be able to go to the gym today. im fortunate my bedroom is my gym.
should add, that i got my rack new. gpr378 $6-700. i forget. and some extra j hooks were included. if i rerolled, id probably go with a powertec entry level product instead of the 378 as it has a better pullup bar and looks nicer, but costs $50-100 more. but i love the 378 regardless.[]---[] Ivanko Barbell Crew #42 []---[]

I would get the rogue r3, and flat bench, then pick up olympic plates off craigslist for no more the $0.50/lb should stay well in your price range and would be picking up equipment that will wont grow out of, last a lifetime and have great resale value if you gave up lifting.
Rogue has great deals on black friday so you might wait till then to see what deals you can get.
with the rogue you can add on with a ton of accessories you might want later. I like the bolt together stuff personally.

I'd buy a set of used weights and a Cap OB-86B and work with that while saving more money until you find a good deal on a used rack and/or bench.

do you want to spend your max budget? i ask because i'm the type of person who's too impatient to wait for good deals if i have the cash to burn.
buying some used weights from a PIAS or craigslist should be pretty fast, Cleveland's advice is good; plenty to do with just weights and maybe a horse stall mat or two while you wait for a good deal on a cage and bench.
OTOH if you want to blow it all now, which is fun as ****, i'd suggest you spend as much of the money on the cage as you can. the cap ob-86b is a fine bar and only costs 130 shipped. i'd get about 300-500# of weights used and a flat bench. all those you can upgrade as you go, but a nice cage will last you a long time.Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

i own this rack and it's served me well. i bought some pvc pipes to fit around the safeties to protect from metal on metal. i've also cut the uprights to fit the basement height (or lack thereof), and bought 2 pairs of the titan j-hooks for convenience.
doing it over: i would not buy it again. it's a fine piece of gear and will serve you just fine, but i would have waited for a better deal on a higher quality piece of equipment.Domicron's Basement Gym and Fun House

I personally bought a used Rogue S3 with safety bars and a matador, a new Rogue bar, new bumper plates, a used bench, and enough wood and stall mats for a 3 layer floor and to build my plyo box and squat box (which is hidden behind the right side of the rack). Total was $1200. Getting used metal plates would save you hundreds off that cost.
My point is that you can totally get a really nice set up for $1000-1200, especially if you are patient and look for some good deals. I think the advice of getting a bar and weights right away and then take your time looking for a good deal on a squat/full rack is spot on. Of course you might get lucky and have someone in your area trying to unload a decent rack too.

How much space do you have to work with?
Craigslist is your friend here. Power rack and dumbbells, if you're lucky you can find it for under 1k, don't bother with a squat rack.
You're into jujitsu so you need the cardio endurance, maybe a concept 2 rower $300 used maybe cheaper, maybe more.
From there, misc **** you need as you go. Don't forget flooring.old broken soldier

nice set-up brother!
To OP, honestly if I were you I'd just buy a gym membership. Way cheaper, you get access to a wider range of equipment, good to see how others who look/perform the way you aim to look/perform workout, good perv and forces you to work hard because odds are everyone around you are going balls to the wall. You'll also have knowledgeable people around who 9/10 are happy to give you advice/tips.
Up to you though man, that's just my opinion - good luck with your goals!
