    Does 5x5 really work?

Today was the first day of Madcow's 5x5 intermediate program. The sets were a joke, I barely felt any pump at all. I know the first few weeks are supposed to be easy but I fail to see how doing 1x5 heavy sets per week will lead to much of an increase in strength... Should I stick to it?

How should we know if you should stick with it.

Tell us more about yourself like how long you been lifting, stats, etc.

In the mean time I will consider you are new to lifting and recommend StrongLifts - http://stronglifts.com/5x5/ It is 5x5 and works very well. I achieved a raw competition total of 1631 with it.

Why are you training on an 'intermediate' program, and why are you posting in a beginner's forum?

With those stats, you should know exactly by now what you should be doing.

Of course it works if you stick with it.
Even in a couple months I saw some healthy gains, but it is a stressful workout for your nervous system.

Sorry I'm not familiar with the forums. I've ran peaking programs in the past but not something like this. I heard Madcow's was decent for linear gains and it seems easy enough to follow. I don't really have time to run something advanced right now as I am in my senior year for engineering.

The first 4 weeks of MC will seem easy if you programmed your start weights correctly. This gives you room for progression in the remainder of the program. Keep running it for the experience -- you should be able to milk some gains. Or, if you want more volume on an intermediate level program, try 5/3/1 --- the BBB Challenge template, in particular.

I undershot my 5RMs in the spreadsheet but not by too much. I didn't want to end up resetting a couple weeks in.

Stick with it then. It's solid, don't worry... you'll get something out of it.

You are doing the wrong Madcow's program. When you stall out on that try this one. http://madcow.wackyhq.com/geocities/...odized_5x5.htm

At 315/455/525 you're beyond the intermediate stage. If you're even 90% of these numbers, I would say you're better off on a % based program rather then a linear progression based one.

Any programs you can recommend then? I just picked Madcow's because it was easy and I could pump my 5RMs in to a spreadsheet lol
