Actually Op's location has a lot to do with his situation, assuming he's in Seattle currently. The job market for accountants is absolute schit in Seattle, and the overall economy is pretty schit as well and it's one of the most UNDERemployed cities in the country. (srs)(CPA in Seattle) The cost of living in Seattle is ridiculous, and many people work 2 jobs in order to scrape by, and a lot of accountants are lucky to crack $15 an hour in their first 1-2 years without the CPA. I work as an analyst and used the CPA as a way to get into something else, because I knew it was such a bad market for accountants. Don't believe anything those internet lists say about it, either. Unemployment is low, schit job employment is high (brb need a BA/BS to drive a forklift of work in a warehouse...srs unfortunately, it's massively over-saturated), so the numbers really don't tell the whole story.

I just realized the average accountant is probably 45k in debt by graduation. 25 from BS then 20 from MS. That's pretty crazy for the overall low income accountants have till their 4-5+ years in.

When your first out of college accounting majors just need someone to give them a shot. IMO big 4 isnt realy ideal because its a tough job and a lot of work when youve never worked before.

I say get experience elsewhere and transition to big4 later if thats still what you want.
