I think glycerol is more or less empty calories. Although it doesn't have an effect on blood sugar, it still provides no nutritional value. Protein bar manufacturers tout this as being "healthy," but it really doesn't come close to the hype.

Edit: That being said, I see no calories from glycerol in this product.

I was looking at this product at 1 fast 400's site:

Liquid Muscle is the first glycerol superhydration system to hit the market. This amazing product contains 50ml. Of glycerine and 20 grams of protein in just four tablespoons. In scientific studies, glycerol was shown to improve the body’s ability to absorb and hold onto large amounts of intramuscular water. This translates into incredible pump and noticeable increases in vascularity. Liquid Muscle is available in a great tasting chocolate flavor.

WHY IS LIQUID MUSCLE SO EFFECTIVE?
Liquid Muscle contains glycerol, a revolutionary substance which has been shown to elevate blood plasma volume. Recent studies have shown that consuming glycerol before a workout can boost your ability to retain intramuscular fluid by up to fifty percent.

HOW SHOULD LIQUID MUSCLE BE CONSUMED?
For High Powered Workouts: It is recommended that you take four to five tablespoons of Liquid Muscle an hour and a half to two hours prior to training. This dosage may be taken in a protein drink or with at least 12 ounces of water. Do not consume any glycerol product without water. You may also add four to five tablespoons of Liquid Muscle to your water bottle in the gym.

For Increased Vascularity Pre-Contest: Take approximately five tablespoons of Liquid Muscle with 12 ounces of water 13 hours prior to prejudging. Take another five tablespoons upon waking on contest day with eight ounces of water. Take another four tablespoons between prejudging and the night show with 12 ounces of water.

IS IT SAFE TO "STACK" LIQUID MUSCLE WITH ANY OTHER PRODUCTS?
Liquid Muscle can be added to any supplement regime you choose. Users report a better pump of glycerol than with creatine, but it is safe to consume creatine while using this product.

WHAT ELSE DOES LIQUID MUSCLE CONTAIN?
When attempting to add muscle to your physique it is extremely important to be in positive nitrogen balance at all times. Therefore, 20 grams of protein was added to this formula to help facilitate this goal. This formula contains the highest concentration of protein of any product on the market. A whopping 20 grams of protein in just four tablespoons! In addition, Liquid Muscle contains no sugar. This is hard to believe when you taste how sweet this product is. That is because glycerol is an extremely sweet tasting substance. You will be surprised when you try this delicious chocolate flavored product.

Yeah I mean it sounds like hype... but then I was reading around about it... now I am just looking to see if anyone has used it.

It does appear that it has a bodybuilding application:

"Endurance athletes can utilize glycerine in conjunction with extra water prior to an event in order to support hydration and therefore enhance performance. The recommended dosage for accomplishing superhydration range varies and each individual should experiment sufficiently prior to use during competition. For reference, start with approximately 1-gram glycerine per kilogram body weight along with an additional 1.5L _ 2.0L of water, consumed 1 _ 4 hours prior to the event.

Interestingly bodybuilders might consider taking glycerine prior to their stage appearance in lower dosages without consuming the additional water to "dry out". Leaving the water out of the equation may cause a shift of existing body water temporarily out of the tissues and into the blood. While this may work to obtain the shrink wrapped look, you should definitely test it out prior to the day of the show to see how you react. Glycerine supplementation will not help those who have failed to diet properly and are covered by a small layer of blubber.

Proper precaution should be taken if you are going to utilize glycerine. Notify someone you know and trust that is going to attend the show so they can help you if you begin to cramp up."

Well today I start my Glycerine review. I will be taking 4 tablespoons of 100% pure glycerine per day pre-workout only. I will resume drinking 1 liter of water per hour at work everyday, and several liters during my workouts. This is a bulking phase, following several weeks off due to a non-workout related injury.

Drinking this much water is not new. I experienced my best gains (bulking) while superhydrating myself. I am down to 195, so extreme gains in weight will not be due to glycerine. I should easily be able to tell any NOTICABLE differences in vascularity / hydration compared to my last bulk (175lbs to 217lbs ) however.

Well I am up to 203, and seeing most of the noticeable gains in my lats, chest, and arms. My stomach is a little bloated by the end of the day, but normal by morning. I feel good overall, and especially my chest (considering that I have only had 1 chest workout so far).

The pumps are incredible, but I am going to attribute that mainly to muscle memory, at least until I hit 220 lbs or so.

A couple things to comment on:

1. There is definately a sweet, oily, chemical aftertaste to this stuff.

2. Great pumps doing legs, which is somewhat unusual for me.

I am a big fan of glycerine. Particularly as a pre cardio supplement. Osmotic stress seems to amplify a cells respose to endurance style training. Its certainly not the best supp in the world but when you can buy a gallon of it for about a buck at your local craft store, then I think its worth it from a cost/benefit standpoint.

Thanks for the input spook, I was beginning to wonder if anyone had ever heard of it I just noticed that Designer Whey "Glycerlean" is actually Glycerine.

So far so good. I weighed in @ 205 yesterday. Definately seeing the gains in all the right places so far. Strength is up as well, but again muscle memory maybe.

Up to 206 lbs and the last couple of days workouts have been incredible. Pumps have been awesome. Intensity is up, strength is up, but size is up more than strength. My shirts are getting really stretched out now more than when I was up to 217 lbs.

So anyways the gains are all going to the right places still.

Up to 208 lbs (and I didn't eat that much today due to a ****ty day at work)

I did bi's, tri's and a light shoulder / forearm workout today. My chest still felt pumped as hell from 3 days ago and looked noticably bigger. No strength gains to report, but I am happy with the size gains so far. I will take measurements when I hit 217 lbs. Then things will get interesting, as that was my plateu before.

What I mean by no strength gains is that I am not hitting any new personal bests yet.

Update:

Well I decided to cut for the past week, because my gurl was visiting from cali. I managed to get my abs looking cut again, but I lost weight. I am now down to 200 lbs, and going to be carb loading again.

Yesterday I could definately feel the glycerine kick in. I took it a little bit earlier, about 1.5 hours before my workout, with ALOT of water. I think I will probably keep taking it earlier (I had been taking it immediately pre workout)

Anyways, so far my opinion is that glycerine has one use for sure, which would be a pre-beach, or pre-contest pump, especially when combined with creatine, taurine, and a N02 product etc...
however, I have not attributed any (permanent) size gains to this product at this time.

Yes I bought the NOW foods 100% pure glycerine. I am not allowed to post the site where I bought it, because the last time I did, the post was deleted.

Ok guys.. 2 quick things to add tonight...

1. It has come to my attention that one of the main ingredients of VPX Plasma Expandor is glycerine. 27g to be exact. I don't know how that translates into tablespoons does anyone know ? The key thing here is that this product is getting rave reviews... interesting.

2. I am back up to 206 lbs, and just had a unbelievable workout. This reminds me of months ago when I was at 217. I felt like an animal. I did heavy shoulders, bi's, tri's, and shrugs. I stayed there longer than I should have, but oh my god, I stretched the hell out of my shirt, and relieved alot of stress which was really necessary tonight. Anyways, if anything I think I may have been undertraining lately so I am going to extend my workouts past 1 hour (only while bulking of course).

Things are really looking up ! !

This is significant because I didn't pack on the calories like I should have today, and still am up 5 lbs since yesterday. I had a great chest / delt workout.

my comments on glycerol

I've been taking Carbo Rush lately before and during my workout. This stuff has a lot of carbs and glycerol. It has made a noticeable difference in only a week. I'm not sure if it's the glycerol or other ingredients in Carbo Rush. But I will say, It's made a HUGE difference in my workouts. AND I am retaining more water in my muscles, and this is what they say is the strength of glycerol. Not quite the same a creatine, but seems to be similar.

Good to know ! How much glycerol does it have per serving ? I am considering mixing my glycerine with a little koolaid in my water bottle for during my workout.

Way back in the day I had considered using it in this fashion, that is combined w/creatine seeing as I wasn't seeing anything from creatine I thought it may help.

Interesting log, it has me thinking of combining it w/my next SV2 run.

Any updates you guys ?

I hit 225 lbs, and am currently cutting (mainly because of summer). I have noticed that this product produces relatively extreme pumps even when it's not stacked if taken 30mins-1hour preworkout. For someone interested in feeling muscle fullness, increasing intensity etc, I would recommend it, and alot of water during your workout.

The only problem I have is that it's extremely sweet. The sweetness of the product also makes me feel kind of "guilty" in a weird way, because I avoid sweets in general, and switched from malto/dextrose to raw oats. Glycerine is such a mystery, that I'm not sure about how it affects insulin etc.

Legalgear, any details on the "delivery system" I'm not sure what you meant exactly.

I personally think that glycerine is very useful. One of my own homemade supplement designs invloved glycerine and ribose (I know, people don't like ribose cause they can't FEEL it)

:bump:

this stuff sounds somewhat intresting, at that price I think its worth it just for the pumps, lets face it one of the main reason most people bodybuild is to look good, and longer, bigger pumps help that.

did you see best results using this at four tablespoons an hour pre workout then?

I actually quit measuring it out, but it was somewhere between 4-8 tbsp. For best results.. I avoided taking it on a completely empty stomach. I took it preworkout only.

So the one people are using

is NOW 100% vegetable glycerine?

Is anyone concerned over the fact that it says that "it is even pure enough to be taken internally", which makes me wonder if perhaps it shouldn't be.

Please pm me a source

It's great for endurance athletes to prevent dehydration. i use to use the twinlab brand glycerol before kickboxing classes/matches to prevent dehydration. worked well i must say, but i didn't do it for the pumps if there was any.
