Regarding the oil patch in Alaska:

It's like Peter's choice in Office Space to work construction. He gets more satisfaction out of the work. He gets to work outside with his hands instead of in a cubicle with endless paperwork feeling like he's never really accomplishing anything. Instead of dog-eat-dog it's like one big family. People care about each other and watch out for each other -- the whole "I am my brother's keeper". He sees the results of his work immediately in the things he's building. And the oil patch also tests your intellectual prowess as well: troubleshooting processes which are running awry, knowing the systems, being able to dial it in so the whole plant is running like a well-oiled machine. You'll never make as much money as a big time lawyer or hedge funder, but then again money is only a means to an end and most people find a balance between needing more money and wanting more free time and less stress.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to stand in a courtroom and deliver an airstrike of logic to the opponent's arguments. That's something that appeals to me. I'm not a lawyer but I definitely considered that path before.

So, Manly - I'm glad you enjoy it. Truly. That's all we can really hope for in this crazy life. I just hope people don't look down on the "blue collar" workers because there are a lot of really great and talented people who chose that life for personal reasons.

Of all the people I know that have watched both, you are the only one that says BB > The Wire.

The most in-depth review I got on the show was from my old roommate, who would give me updates as he watched the entire series. He said that BB was good, but not as good as The Wire. He speculated that the reason everyone thought it was so amazing and gritty and dark was because they had never seen TW.

He thoroughly enjoyed BB but did not feel it was up to TW.

I watched both in chronological order as they aired.

I preferred BB.

But it's very close.
