Echo what a few people have pointed out, functional strength depends on what function you are doing, pole vaulting, mountain climbing, gorilla fighting, competitive eating, etc.
Top tier 'athletes' of anything are using some sort of performance enhancing kool-aid, strongman, powerlifting, bodybuilding, crossfit, football, bicycling, etc. Doesn't cheapen what they accomplish but it should change your aspiration if you want to stay away from the dark side.
I could be mistaken on this one, but crossfitters need to realize the top tier athletes managed to get those bodies with the help of other types of training, you don't flop like a fish for a while and look like a spartan. It's like thinking ronnie coleman's new product line of supplements is what he took to look like what he does now, just because they do something or take something now, doesn't mean it's how they got there in the first place. The amount of idiots doing sets and sets of curl variants when they cannot even do 10 pull-ups is insane.
That's my biggest gripe with bodybuilding, people see pro bodybuilders doing some workout and decide to do the exact same thing, so they can look like a pro bodybuilder, when the bodybuilder did a completely different routine to get where they are before they made the switch to more isolation driven lifts. It seems to have taken the general population forever to catch on to this, and I think the crossfitter generation is arriving at this thing, where they see top tier athletes of crossfit games doing a WOD and feel if they do the same WOD they will look the same or be on the same level. Hence why they are all so got dang annoying bobby.

Bodybuilders train for aesthetics, like a blank canvass that shall be made into art.
Power-lifters train purely for strength.
Both serious athletes have strict diets
Functional strength doesn't matter to you if you don't care much for it
Why do people think bodybuilders are lame because they don't train for functional strength like power-lifters do? They are at two different ends of the spectrum!
But obviously the bodybuilder will be strong as fukk regardless, since he still trains with progressive overload.Bear mode engaged crew

cardio is nice and all but doing light **** like this is only shifting your fibers to slow twitch which is gonna make you weaker overall
there are 2 parts to strength: density (yes, density) and cross sectional area of the muscle. Force = Pressure * Area
ronnie just had so much muscle
also to those who say strongmen are "just fat"..
if they were to cut they'd be way stronger than anyone else at whatever weight they stop at, then what do u have on them? theyre jacked, lean and strong as fukLast edited by Tomohawk92; 10-02-2014 at 12:42 PM.

LOL @ CF crusaders thinking guys like bailey and froning actually do CF. Most of their workouts are based upon strength training, they only do CF for conditioning and leading up to competition. This is why CF guys always end up small and weak as hell. Take a bodybuilder who trains properly, give him 6 months in a CF gym and i can promise you he'll be one of the most athletic people there.
bodybuilders still do main compounds, brb deadlifts arent functional

Yes, because a woman wants a man that's going to drag a bus up a hill or lift a 300lb ball of concrete onto a tree stump instead of a good looking guy elohel.
That's the equivalent of saying that a man wants a fat bitch who's gonna be healthy through pregnancy rather than a thin fit woman.

no sh!t. Their day usually consists of 2-3 strength/skill (swimming etc)/workout portions... maybe no workout if its not during leadup to a competition. Even then though they probably do heavy EMOMs
Your bodybuilder point is a bit off, since bodybuilders never train Oly lifts. A standard bodybuilder has the mobility of a rusty hinge. I'd say take an Oly lifter, put him in a CF gym and he would do well given he could have time to work on his fitness.Glorious PC master race
